When it comes to hunting any type of ghost in Phasmophobia, there are certain unwritten clues to look for when tracking down your ghostly culprit. One such clue is visible breath with freezing temperatures, but there's more to it than you may realize. Here's our handy guide that answers if seeing your breath in Phasmophobia means freezing temps.
What seeing your breath means for freezing temps in Phasmophobia
You may notice while hunting a ghost in Phasmophobia that you can occasionally see your breath in front of you, meaning the area you're in is (often) unusually cold. This can indeed be an indicator of 'Freezing Temperatures' evidence (inside your Journal) but don't immediately jump to that conclusion because it can mean other things as well.
For instance, sometimes when you arrive at your chosen haunted location, the weather of choice can be snowfall. When that's the case, most of that location's explorable areas will be cold by default. You may see your breath in every room of the house or building you walk through, so consider that situational possibility when checking for that piece of evidence.
Also, even when finding the ghost's designated room/area, the room will be noticeably colder than the rest, and you'll likely see your breath while standing in it. However, it doesn't automatically mean that the temperature in the room will dip below zero. It may be a ghost that doesn't fall into that category of evidence, so don't judge your findings based simply on visible breath.
You may also notice that certain ghosts will provoke occasional "ghost mist" mini-events (seen above) that can happen whether or not you're in the targeted room. These look very similar to the "cold breath" animations, but they are not a temperature indicator.
However, you can take a photo of them as a source of "activity" if you wish (they do not count as a ghost picture!). The Oni is also a specific type of ghost that can't create these "mist" events, so seeing one can at least help you rule that one out. Also, walking speeds are another exceptional type of unwritten clue to look for.
How to check freezing temperatures in Phasmophobia
You can check if you're reaching freezing temperatures using the thermometer (any tier you prefer), as shown in the image above. If the temperature is between 5 Celsius and -0.5 Celsius, it's merely cold and you'll see your breath. Any temperature below -0.5 Celsius is considered freezing and that's when you can check that off your evidence list.
In my time playing the game, typically ghosts that cause the freezing temperatures tend to take it down considerably, sometimes even around -3 and -4 Celsius.
Why aren't freezing ghosts showing freezing temperatures?
While your first move in a ghost hunt is usually to get the breaker on to help preserve your sanity, if you want to figure out freezing temperatures right away, your best move is to turn the breaker off (or keep it off; any difficulty above Amateur will have the breaker off at the start).
When the breaker is turned on, temperatures will rise throughout the house, temporarily throwing off your findings. It will take considerably more time for a roaming ghost to cool down a room below freezing when the breaker is on. This can prove especially frustrating if you're dealing with a ghost that's not giving many clear hints about its identity, no matter how much equipment you place around its room.
By leaving or turning the breaker off, you'll stop the rise in temperature throughout the house from the heating system and you'll be able to track down the ghost much more quickly via freezing temperatures. Just be mindful of your sanity which dips faster while in the dark, and consider bringing a Firelight to help offset the drain.
