How to identify a Yokai in Phasmophobia – All Evidence and Tips

The Spirit Box evidence is cruel irony at work.

The Yokai is a Ghost Type in Phasmophobia that is very dangerous when playing with other people. They can Hunt even when players have high Sanity if they are talking a lot in the Ghost Room. Yokai have the Spirit Box as one of their pieces of evidence as well, making it so players will have to talk to them and potentially anger it. This is how to identify a Yokai in Phasmophobia.

The Yokai's unique evidence in Phasmophobia are the Spirit Box, Ghost Orbs, and D.O.T.S. Projector. The Yokai can initiate a Hunt as early as 80% Sanity if players are talking near it. While Hunting, the Yokai won't be able to track the player through sound very well or by tracking the electronics they are carrying.

Yokai Strengths and Weaknesses and what they mean in Phasmophobia

The Yokai's Strengths and Weaknesses are written in the Journal as:

  • Strength - Talking near a Yokai will anger it, increasing the chance of an attack.
  • Weakness - When hunting, a Yokai can only hear voices close to it.

The Strength of the Yokai refers to its ability to Hunt at high Sanity when players are making noise near the Ghost. Normally, the Yokai can only Hunt when the average player Sanity is 50% and below but when players are talking near the Ghost, this is increased to 80%.

The Weakness of the Yokai refers to its inability to track players from far away through the sound of their voice or their electronics. Players can test to see if a Ghost is a Yokai by getting further away from it, out of sight, and then either speaking to it or leaving their electronics on. If the Ghost isn't attracted to the sound and light, it's most likely a Yokai.

Tips for dealing with a Yokai in Phasmophobia

If players have already verified that they are dealing with a Yokai, they can talk to each other outside of the Ghost Room or in the van to avoid causing a Hunt. Talking near the Yokai will increase its activity as well, prompting more Ghost Interactions. Players that have not identified that the Ghost is a Yokai, either playing on Nightmare or lacking the third piece of evidence, they can do a test. Equipped with Smudge Sticks, players can wait for a Hunt and get a short distance away from the Ghost. By turning on their Flashlight and talking out loud, most Ghosts will pinpoint the player and go towards them. If the Ghost is having trouble finding the player, however, then it's most likely a Yokai.
