Sometimes, it can be hard to figure out what to do with Noctowl. It doesn't have any stand-out stats, and it doesn't fulfill a niche role. Since it was introduced in Generation II, though, trainers have been trying to figure out sets for this owl. There definitely are some things Noctowl can do in battle, particularly in Scarlet & Violet, but they require a good nature.
Best natures for Hoothoot and Noctowl in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
The best natures for Hoothoot and Noctowl in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet are as follows:
- Calm (+ Sp. Def, - Attack)
- Timid (+ Speed, -Attack)
Thanks to a strong movepool, Noctowl can actually serve as an underrated Calm Mind user. It can use Calm and Timid natures in this role; it just depends on how Noctowl is setting up the sweep.
At 70 Speed, Noctowl isn't outspeeding much. Timid would make it faster than threats like Heatran and Sinistcha, however. A Calm natured Noctowl would obviously be slower, but it can set up in front of other threats like Gengar and Hisuian Zoroark.

Both of these are useful, but I recommend using Timid. The extra Speed would allow Noctowl to flip lots of losing matchups under the right circumstances. For instance, Shadow Ball can be used to break through Corviknight after enough boosts.
How to choose natures in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet
The key to picking the right nature in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet is envisioning how the given Pokémon will be used. This plays a role, especially in deciding whether or not the Pokémon will need Speed or not.
Even with Timid, Noctowl won't be able to outspeed Gholdengo, Glimmora, Mamoswine, and lots of other threats. This is why Calm might work for it, as long as Noctowl can still beat the Pokémon below its Speed tier. These are the discussions trainers need to have before picking a nature for their Pokémon.
