Best Starter to choose in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Who will be your first partner?

Every player is faced with an important decision at the beginning of their Pokémon journey—what starter will they choose. In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, this choice consists of Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. But the question is, which of these starters is the best?

Ultimately there is no wrong decision as all three starters are solid Pokémon and can easily fit on any team. But when considering the challenges you will face in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the best starter to choose is Chimchar.

Chimchar's typing of fire and fighting make it an excellent choice in the early game. Once it evolves into Monferno at level 14 and learns its first fighting move, it will make short work of Roark. Its fire typing will then make defeating the second gym's grass typing a piece of cake. Finally, Infernape is a fantastic Pokémon that will greatly help against the Elite Four and Champion in the late game.

Another reason to pick Chimchar is the low amount of fire-type Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. There are very few choices for fire types, and if you don't select Chimchar, you will have to rely on Ponyta. So consider carefully before choosing your first Pokémon!
