Trainers have a higher chance of winning the lottery than stumbling on a shiny Pokémon. This is why it’s such a big prestige to capture or even breed one. However, can a shiny starter Pokémon just be handed to you in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl?
The answer is yes—but you either have to be super lucky or patient enough to wait for one to appear.
How to receive a shiny starter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Receiving a shiny starter Pokémon is just as likely as bumping into one in the wild. There’s always a 1 in 4,096 chance that any Pokémon that you hatch, capture, or given as a starter come out as a shiny. It’s even more efficient to “hunt” for a shiny Chimchar, Piplup, and Turwig during the selection, since you don’t have to look for the Pokémon in the wild (and deal with their rare encounter rates).
There’s no shortcut. If you want a shiny starter, you need to reset your game and load your save until you get it. But who knows, plenty of trainers have received shinies on their first few tries, and you could be one of them.
