Tips and tricks for surviving the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo

Hoo boy. That's a lot of bad guys.

The Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw Demo takes a page out of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with the many different brutal chainsaw-related deaths our protagonist Leon S. Kennedy suffers. The demo itself covers the opening act of the game, which is a crash course in survival. Here's how to emerge victorious.

Conserve your ammo

Ammo is incredibly scarce in Resident Evil titles by default. It's a way of forcing players to pick their battles and raises the tension when a player knows they don't have enough ammo for the encounter. As such, you'll want to make use of Leon's thunder thighs.

While the ganados can be quick, they'll usually walk toward Leon at a slow gait. Take this opportunity to put a bullet or two in their kneecaps. This should drop them to their knees, opening them up for a powerful roundhouse kick or a knife to the head. This method cuts ammo in half as it usually doesn't take more than three shots to drop a foe.

Craft what you can

Crafting resources are just as sparse, but they do exist. So, combine those green and red herbs and make your handgun ammo to help survive this onslaught. The Chainsaw Demo follows the model of Resident Evil Village where scrap is required in addition to gunpowder. In the map below, we lay out the locations of each crafting component.

Keep running

You're not going to kill every enemy in this encounter. It's a never-ending swarm of enemies. Throw in the limited ammo factor and the only way you're going to survive is by staying on the move. Trying to hole up in one of the small homes is a death sentence as there are simply too many enemies. Our strategy was to essentially run a lap around the village, starting at the bottom and ending up in the house with the shotgun.

When players reach the village, they can creep up along the north side to grab a green herb and gunpowder. There is a ganado near the gunpowder that can be dispatched with a stealth kill. From there, players have two options.

Heading into the two-story building will automatically spawn the chainsaw-wielding Dr. Salvador. If that's your course of action, block the bottom window with the bookcase and break the barrels in the rear of the house. Head upstairs to grab the shotgun and hand grenade. Salvador will be quick on your heels, so turn around and put a couple of shotgun blasts into him before going out the second-story window. Drop a grenade at the feet of the encroaching mob and empty your shotgun into Salvador. By then, the encounter should be over and a cutscene will play.

Option two is to play the role of a wandering bandit, looting everything that isn't nailed down. If you don't enter the two-story home, Salvador will spawn at the large gates to the northeast of the village. Once you're done pilfering the village, head to the two-story building and follow the procedure for the first option.

The demo itself is relatively short and there isn't much wiggle room for trying out different things. This encounter is arguably one of the hardest in the original Resident Evil 4. So, if you managed to get through to the end, congrats! You're now more than ready for the full game.
