Zen Mode is an exploration-only mode that you can go into to simply ride/ski etc., around wherever you desire without having to compete or worry about your game progress. In Zen Mode, your progression and interactions with other players will be deactivated.

This means that you won't earn trophies and will not see the ghosts of other online players. You will also not be able to join other online groups or matches with your friends while in this mode. Basically, if you want a nice breather, then this mode is a good one to use!
