How to Fish in Bridger Western

Let's kick things off with the basics. In order to start fishing, you will need two basic things: a fishing rod and bait. Both of these items can be purchased at the Tackle Bait Fishing vendor. This store and its NPC are located at a dock on the northern coast of Lake Boullier, which you can easily reach by following the train track in the forest.

Once you reach the docks, enter the Tackle Bait shop and speak with the vendor. There, you can buy a Fishing Rod for 150 moola and Fishing Bait for 15 moola. Once you have the gear, you can start fishing immediately. Keep in mind, though, that the Fishing Rod takes one of the three available Utility slots and will replace an existing utility if you are already at the limit.

The best place to fish is right there on the dock, but you don't have to stay there; you can fish anywhere there's water, whether it's a lake or a river. The dock is best because it is convenient - you can sell fish right there immediately. The only place you can't fish is the swamp. Here's how the fishing mini-game works:

  • Select the Fishing Rod from the quick menu.
  • Click and hold to cast toward your cursor.
  • Complete a QTE to reel in the catch.
  • The length of that QTE scales with the rarity of what you hooked - better rewards take longer or harder reeling windows.
  • What Fishing Bait Does:
    • Consumed while fishing, one per use (bait consumption is currently bugged)
    • Makes your pull time 2x faster
    • It does not change rarity odds in the current version of the game - it is a speed and efficiency consumable, not a luck booster.

WARNING: Do not eat raw fish. Consuming an uncooked fish will make your character throw up, stunning you for a brief period. Always cook your fish at a campfire first.

All Fishing Rewards and Drop Rarities

There are currently not many items you can catch while fishing in Bridger Western. Nevertheless, that doesn't mean you shouldn't fish, as the items you do obtain are essential for your progression, your build, and your economy: fishing is one of your main sources of moola. Items you can catch are divided into different rarities, with the following drop chances: Legendary 0.1%, Epic 2%, Rare 16.25%, and Common 81.7%. Here's the full list in the current build:

  • Cod (Common): Sells for 35 moola, can be cooked
  • Bass (Common): Sells for 45 moola, can be cooked
  • Snapper (Common): Sells for 25 moola, can be cooked
  • Chests (Rare): You can get all sorts of useful items from them
  • Mares Leg (Epic): You fish up the rusted version, then take it to Flint (found in front of the bridge near the train stop at Ridge B. County) and pay 1,500 moola to refurbish it. Dying with the rusted Mares Leg drops it, so be careful. Once refurbished, the Mares Leg becomes a secondary weapon that holds 7 bullets and fires faster than the Winchester Repeater — it is automatically sent to your bank storage upon obtainment. If it does not appear there, manually store it in your bank at least once, or it will be lost on death or rejoin.
  • Golden Bass (Legendary): Appears in your inventory as "LEGENDARY GOLDEN BASS." Cannot be cooked and has no other function. Note: it currently sells for only 1,500 moola due to a bug — the intended price is 15,000 moola. It is recommended that you store it in the bank until the price is fixed.
  • Arrow Shards (Legendary): A secondary Stand obtainment method. They guarantee a Stand and can grant any normally obtainable Stand. They cannot be used if you already have a Stand, cannot be dropped, and cannot be banked or stored — but they are not lost on death or rejoin, so there is no rush to use them immediately.

How to Cook Fish in Bridger Western

Fish can be cooked by placing them on a campfire. This is one of two uses fish currently have in the game, the other being an economy boost, as you can sell them for moola at the Tackle Bait shop. This adds additional value to fish; beyond being a source of income, they can also be useful in combat and exploration: catch fish, cook them, then convert them into small healing bonuses and species-specific buffs.

TIP: Don't leave the fish on a campfire too long, because they will burn and you'll waste them. And never eat raw fish — doing so will stun your character as they throw up.

All Cooked Fish Buffs in Bridger Western

  • Cooked Cod: Small heal + reduced damage buff for approximately 20 seconds
  • Cooked Bass: Small heal
  • Cooked Snapper: Small heal + brief speed buff

Can You Make Money by Fishing in Bridger Western?

Yes, but fishing is more of a steady-value money source than a pure fast-cash farming route. The common fish sells for 25 to 45 moola each, while the Golden Bass is the huge payout item — though note that it currently sells for only 1,500 moola due to a bug, instead of the intended 15,000. If you fish one up, store it in your bank and wait for the price fix rather than selling it now.

With that in mind, the fishing economy has two layers: consistent small returns from common fish, and lottery-style spikes from Golden Bass. That makes it more stable than pure jackpot systems, but still exciting because of the legendary outcomes.

Bridger Western Fishing Tips

Here are some tips to help you get more out of fishing in Bridger Western:

  • Fish at the Tackle Bait dock whenever possible — it is the most efficient spot since you can sell your catches immediately without traveling.
  • Store your Golden Bass if you catch one. Its sell price is bugged to 1,500 moola right now, but it is intended to be 15,000 moola once fixed. Storing it guarantees you get the full value later.
  • Be careful with the rusted Mares Leg. You drop it on death before it gets refurbished, so head straight to Flint at Ridge B. County as soon as you fish one up.
  • Cook your fish before eating — raw fish will stun you. Always use a campfire first.
  • Cooked Snapper is especially useful during combat or traversal, since its speed buff can help you reposition or escape. Cooked Cod is the best defensive food, offering about 20 seconds of reduced incoming damage.
  • Arrow Shards won't disappear when you die or leave, so if you fish one up but already have a Stand, you can safely hold onto it until you're ready.

Bridger Western Fish FAQs

How do you fish in Bridger Western?

To fish in Bridger Western, you need a Fishing Rod, which lets you cast toward your cursor and start a reeling QTE. Once something bites, you need to complete the reel-in sequence successfully to land the catch. Higher-rarity rewards have a longer reeling process, so fishing is not completely passive.

Where do you get a Fishing Rod in Bridger Western?

You get the Fishing Rod from the Tackle Bait vendor for 150 moola. The same vendor also sells Fishing Bait for 15 moola each, which makes your pull time twice as fast. Note that the Fishing Rod counts as a Utility item and will replace one of your existing utilities if you are already at the three-slot limit.

What does Fishing Bait do in Bridger Western?

Fishing Bait is a consumable that gets used while fishing and makes your pull time 2x faster. It is a speed and efficiency tool only — it does not increase your chances of landing rare or legendary catches.

What can you get from fishing in Bridger Western?

Fishing rewards include common fish like Cod, Bass, and Snapper, plus rarer pulls like Chests, the Mares Leg, Golden Bass, and Arrow Shards. This means fishing can give you money, cooking ingredients, rare weapon progression, and even a Stand-related reward if you get lucky enough.

Can you get a Stand from fishing in Bridger Western?

Yes, you can get Arrow Shards from fishing as a Legendary reward (0.1% chance). Arrow Shards are a secondary Stand obtainment method that are guaranteed to grant you a Stand, though they cannot be used if you already have one. Importantly, Arrow Shards are not lost on death or rejoin, so you can safely hold onto them until you are ready.

Is fishing worth it in Bridger Western?

Fishing is worth doing because it supports several parts of progression at once. It can give you steady sellable fish, cooked food with healing or buffs, and rare loot rewards like Golden Bass, Arrow Shards, or the Mares Leg, so it connects to economy, sustain, weapons, and Stands all at once.

Can you cook fish in Bridger Western?

Yes, fish can be cooked at a campfire, and cooked fish gives small healing plus extra effects depending on the fish. Cooked Cod gives a reduced-damage buff lasting around 20 seconds, while Cooked Snapper gives a short speed buff. Do not eat raw fish — doing so will stun your character as they throw up.

What happens if you eat raw fish in Bridger Western?

Eating a raw fish causes your character to throw up, which stuns you for a brief period. Always cook fish at a campfire before consuming them.

How much is the Golden Bass worth in Bridger Western?

The Golden Bass is intended to sell for 15,000 moola, but it is currently bugged and only pays out 1,500 moola when sold. The developers have confirmed the price will be corrected in a future update, so it is recommended to store your Golden Bass in the bank until that fix goes live.
