Complete Dead Rails Deep Freeze Update Guide

Find out everything there is to know about the new Deep Freeze gamemode!

The Deep Freeze Game Mode is the latest addition to Dead Rails. It is a shorter game mode because, to complete it, you have to cross 40 km, compared to the standard mode, where you have to cross 80 km. However, while the mode may lack in sheer size, it more than makes up for it with its fast-paced, action-packed gameplay, coupled with the new freezing game mechanic players will have to work with. So, if you want to find out how to complete this mode, then check out our Complete Dead Rails Deep Freeze Game Mode Guide!

The Deep Freeze Game Mode is two times shorter than the Normal Mode, and this means that you will have to traverse only 40 km instead of the usual 80 km. This means players on a tight schedule might prefer this game mode, as the expected completion time is roughly 15-30 minutes. This game mode re-uses the biome from the Frost Bite mode, so players who have already played that mode will be familiar with the map layout.

The core mechanic of the Deep Freeze Game Mode is a freezing mechanic, meaning that in order to prevent frostbite, you will have to stay close to a heat source. Failing to do so will result in you being significantly slowed down, and, more importantly, you will begin to lose health rapidly. The new game mode also introduces waves of enemies that will attack you at night. During this time, they will also entirely stop your train, forcing you to shift your focus from exploring and looting to fighting and surviving, as you can only get the train moving once you have cleared all of the wave enemies out.

How to Complete the Deep Freeze Game Mode

First of all, you will have to select the Deep Freeze game mode. To do this, simply head to the Game mode selection area (the train station at the back of the town in which you first spawn in) and select the Deep Freeze mode, which is highlighted in blue. While the core gameplay loop stays largely similar to other game modes, you would be well-advised to keep some of the following tips in mind:

  1. Stock up on weapons and health-restoration items: This is a very combat-oriented game mode, so having as many high-quality guns as possible will go a long way. We wholeheartedly recommend the Mauser C96 and the Thompson. Also, you are bound to take damage at some point, so be sure to bring health items such as Snake Oil with you.
  2. Make sure to bring the torch from the starting base: The developers were kind enough to give you a portable heat source for free there, so why not take advantage of it? With it, you will be able to explore much farther and keep the cold out.
  3. Always be wary of frostbite: Always try to stay near a heat source, such as a torch or a running train. Keep in mind that riding a horse will not prevent you from getting frostbitten.
  4. Look out for points of interest: They will provide you with useful loot. They spawn the same way as on the Bite-Sized Game Mode, so you can plan your route accordingly.

The Frost Train in Dead Rails

The Frost Train is similar in appearance to the Armored Train, but with a cool ice-blue texture. It costs 290 bonds to unlock and can reach a maximum speed of 80 km/h (104 km/h with the Conductor class selected). It has an extremely handy feature of radiating cold, which will weaken all nearby enemies, making them do less damage if they hit you. As of the release of this article, there seems to be a bug where Outlaw enemies do not weaken from the cold aura, but the developers are aware of it and will probably fix it in no time. Overall, it is a very good train that is definitely worth spending you hard earned Bonds on.

This is one of the more time-efficient game modes, as your first successful completion can theoretically net you 40 Bonds, while also requiring you to traverse only 40 km as opposed to the standard 80 km.
