The April Fools Event in Dead Rails brings new surprises, including the Fool's Gold and Horsing Around limited-time game modes. Furthermore, a new character class is added to the game called Horse Class, which you can get only while the special event lasts; here's how.
How to unlock the Horse Class in Dead Rails

You must complete the Horsing Around game mode to get the Horse Class in Dead Rails. Go to the party creation stage and select the Horsing Around mode from the available selection (see image above). Finishing your run in this mode can be challenging. Hence, I suggest playing the regular mode first if playing as a beginner to understand the basic mechanics.
How to complete the Horsing Around mode in Dead Rails
It's best to play with other players, therefore create a party of higher size so more people can join. However, you can go on a solo run if you're feeling confident. In the Horsing Around mode, you spawn as a horse with a shovel and a sack but can perform most human functions.

There is no train, so you just have to follow the rail tracks and run 80 kilometers to reach Mexico, while looting and arming yourself with proper gear, to finish the game. The Horsing Around mode also allows you to complete the Pony Express challenge for which you must complete the game without any player using the train. Indeed, this achievement unlocks if you win as there isn't a train to use.
Tips for completing the Horsing Around Mode in Dead Rails
The objective here is simple: complete the run. However, you will need some experience, team effort, and perhaps a few tries to complete the Horsing Around mode. Here are some tips you can use in your attempt to unlock the Horse Class:
- At the very beginning, sell the Gold Bar and equip yourself with a weapon from the Gunsmith. A Shotgun is an ideal choice, but you can upgrade to a Rifle later on when you have enough money.
- Try to get some armor on your horse body as well.
- You can easily outrun most zombies, except for some special ones like Werewolves. Runner Zombies run at the same pace as you, so keep some distance from them.
- Outlaws can be troublesome yet rewarding, therefore, take them out if you have good weaponry.
- Because horses cannot regenerate health, you must keep some healing items on you at all times.
- Nights can get tricky, but you may adopt the following strategy:
- Blood Moon: Vampires are easy to dodge as they spawn in front of you. Just keep running forward and move sideways (hit A & D alternatively) to avoid attacks when they spawn. They can't catch up to hit you from behind.
- Full Moon: Werewolves are fast, therefore, you need to walk backward while hitting them with your weapon.
- New Moon: Deal with the Runner Zombies in the night just like you dealt with the Werewolves.
- Lightning Storm: Either find shelter and stay inside the building to avoid a random strike, or you can carry a Lightning Rod while running to keep yourself safe.
- At the last outpost, take out the Outlaws and lower the bridge by rotating the crank. You can then wait inside the stronghold and fight off the creatures for the next night. Otherwise, you can walk up the top beam of the bridge and sit at the end to avoid combat (just don't fall into the water). This doesn't work on a Full Moon night as Vampires still may reach you.
Dead Rails Horse Class - How to equip and features

After completing the Horsing Around mode and making it out of Mexico alive, the Horse Class will automatically be added to your character customization menu. To equip this class, simply visit the Tailor in the main lobby and select Horse from the list of Classes.
Playing as a Horse Class character in Dead Rails, you get improved movement speed but not as much as a Vampire. Your starter weapon is a Shovel and you don't regenerate health on your own. Therefore, healing items are a must to carry in your inventory. Most importantly, you can equip a Saddle on yourself which allows your teammates to ride you. Furthermore, you can carry a cart around attached to your back. This can be used to carry several items to trade stations effortlessly in one go.
