Roblox aiming for 100-player games with good performance

AI tools are coming to Roblox.

Roblox is setting its sights on supporting high-performance, 100-player games — even on lower-end devices. During the 2024 Roblox Developer Conference (RDC), the company shared its plans to optimize performance across the platform, ensuring that experiences like battle royales, sports games, and open-world adventures can run smoothly on devices with as little as 2GB of RAM.

"We’re going to make it possible for a developer to host a high-performance, 100-player open world, sports or battle royale–type game on Roblox and have it run on 2 GB RAM devices anywhere in the world at good frame rates. We won’t stop until this is possible," David Baszucki, Founder and CEO announced.

This focus on performance comes after significant improvements that were made earlier this year. Roblox has been fine-tuning its platform by reducing app launch times, increasing streaming adoption, and cutting down crashes, particularly on Windows. According to Baszucki, there has been a 64% reduction in crash rates across all devices.

To continue their efforts, Roblox unveiled Harmony at RDC2024. Harmony optimizes the way the platform handles everything from CPU and GPU usage to RAM and bandwidth, both on the client and server sides. It's designed to make sure players across all types of devices have the best experience possible.

Roblox is also looking toward the future with AI-driven creation tools. The company gave users an early look at a project that will allow developers to generate 3D content using text, video, or even 3D prompts.

“We see a powerful future where Roblox experiences will have extensive generative AI capabilities to power real-time creation integrated with gameplay," Baszucki said. These tools will be designed to run efficiently, making them accessible to all creators, regardless of the device.

With these performance goals and tools, Roblox is clearly looking to make its platform more powerful and accessible, ensuring that large-scale games can thrive without sacrificing the quality of the player experience.
