Late in the evening on October 31, 2021, Roblox CEO and Founder David Baszucki created a post on the Roblox blog that outlined the reasons for the historic Roblox outage, as well as some of the steps that Roblox took to remedy the issue. This message came as part of what Baszucki calls "Respect the Community," a commitment to transparency with players.
Perfect Storm of Issues
The blog post explains that there were several issues behind the three-day outage that outraged many Roblox fans. Sadly, the site's infrastructure, which was already under heavy strain from an upcoming holiday weekend, experienced a hard to detect the bug. The bug itself was not caused by the influx of players but rather the increase of servers on Roblox's end. This then caused an unprecedented communication and deployment error between Roblox services.

Bumpy Road to Recovery
Due to the subtlety of the bug, the diagnostic process was trickier and took longer than previous outages. Normally, Roblox would expect to be operating again within a few hours. This issue caused more of a headache for the Roblox team, who worked dutifully through the weekend to remedy the outage. Eventually, the team could tune the performance, reconfigure, and load-scale until Roblox was running again.
Moving Forward
Baszucki promised at the end of the blog post to soon publish a deeper analysis of the issue. This analysis will have a higher degree of detail, both for diagnostics and problem-solving. It will also outline steps Roblox will take to prevent this from ever happening in the future. He ends the blog post by thanking everyone involved for their hard work and patience.
