In Sifu, Fajar the Botanist is far more difficult than every other enemy on the first level. He's a boss, so it makes sense, but to fight him you have to run a lot more than fight.
It won't take many shots to knock the Botanist out, but staying focused on the repetition of the fight will be the hardest part. There is no need to worry about having special moves to beat him—you can beat him even if you have zero unlockable skills.
The Botanist must be defeated in two rounds. Each round involves hitting him four times before he blocks and then avoids his attacks by jumping over the vegetation. Repeat this process to win. It seems that bosses will not be susceptible to combos, so don't expect to use them against him for too long each bout. Instead, count both attacks and dodge accordingly.
In the first round, just take advantage of the environment to win easily. Once he gets to blocking, jump over the plant holders. His focus will be ruined, and he will miss. Then he will jump over and attack again. Keep doing this until he loses.
If you beat him once, the game will reduce one of your deaths on your death counter. You have to dodge a lot during the second round. There will be plenty of bamboo around, make sure to pick it up during your fight to really knock his health down.
This is a cheat sheet for dodging:
- Use dodge to flank the Botanist whenever he gets ready to attack.
- If he disappears and becomes a circle in the bamboo, dodge to the left or right, never backward.
- You want to dodge backward only when he uses his special sword strike.
Besides that, just hit him once or twice at a time. You will get hit easily if you go overboard, destroying your structure bar. If you can't get away, parry instead, but don't make parrying your primary defense. When you parry too much, he knocks you out really well.
Keep going, and he will eventually fall.
