Sims 4 Broken Mods – How To Find and Delete or Fix

One bad mod can break your whole game!

There are an unfathomable amount of mods made for The Sims 4—so much so it can be hard to keep track of which are currently operable. This is especially compounded when normally operable mods are disrupted by EA updating The Sims 4.

We understand you don't want to deal with wonky mods and just want to get back to playing The Sims 4. Here's how to investigate your mods and what to do when they are corrupted, broken, or outdated.

How do you find broken mods for The Sims 4?

If you're anticipating outdated or broken mods from a recent Sims 4 update, the best way to check for broken mods is to use The Sims Forums. If you go to the Discussion tab, you can find a thread for a recent update, which will list all known broken mods caused by the update. Scroll through this and see if any of your mods are on the list.

If you suddenly notice your Sims 4 game starts breaking and you believe it is caused by an outdated mod, then you'll need to sort through them. The best way to do this is to drag one mod file to your desktop (out of the Mods folder). Then, see if your game works again. Repeat this process until you find the corrupted mod.

To delete a broken mod, just delete the file from your PC. Without most computers, you'll just right-click the file and choose Delete. Then, you'll go to The Sims 4 folder on your PC and delete the file that is titled localthumbcache.package, which will clear the cache for your game, effectively resetting any damage that occurred due to mods.

How often do mods break in The Sims 4?

While it might be sensible to think all mods are corrupted by a Sims 4 update, it isn't that simple. Every mod has a different lifespan before it must be fixed or updated — this is because certain Sims 4 updates interfere with random parts of different mods.

EA is not looking to purposely corrupt mods, so each time this occurs, it is just accidental damage since they prioritize the performance of the game itself. Mods can also break without an update occurring due to a mistake on the part of the modder.
