Starfield is all about space exploration and spacecraft battle is a common aspect of the gameplay. You can disable or destroy enemy ships to claim their cargo. However, when the odds are against you, the only survival option left is to flee from the battle. In this guide, I've explained how you can do so.
How to run away from a space battle in Starfield
If you're about to lose a space battle, you can use Grav Jump to warp through space to another star system so that the enemy can no longer chase you. Grav Jump can be performed from the Starmap and the time to initialize the jump will depend on the power allocated to the Grav Drive (GRV).
Assuming that your ship is about to be destroyed, here's what you need to do quickly run away from the battle:
- In the bottom left corner of your screen, you'll see six system indicators. You need to take the power from the weapon systems on the left and allocate it to the GRV bar on the right (see image). I'd say give the Grav Drive maximum power for an instant warp. You can manage power using the arrow keys on your keyboard.
- Now go to the menu by pressing Tab and select Starmap. The game is automatically paused in the menu so you don't have to worry about getting shot by the enemies.
- The Starmap will show the planet you're currently orbiting. Press Esc or Tab twice to show the star systems.
- Hover over any nearby star system and Set Course by pressing R.
- Finally, hold X to Jump to the selected star system and escape the enemy spaceships.

How to survive ship combat in Starfield
Now that you know how to escape from a space battle, I have some extra tips that will help you survive ship combat in Starfield:
- Allocate power appropriately: Your ship has various systems that need power to function properly. Build the habit of assigning power to the system that requires it. While attacking, shift the power to the weapon systems LAS, BAL, and MSL. When chasing or escaping, prioritize ENG for engine speed. SHD or shield power is also important to protect your hull integrity.
- Repair when necessary: In the bottom right corner, you'll see the health bar of your spacecraft. Keep an eye on the hull's integrity and repair it by pressing the letter O when the health drops.
- Upgrade your ship: You should try upgrading your ship's parts for better performance.
