In Starship Troopers: Terran Command, a unit's level matters greatly. The more Bugs your units kill, the more experience points they gain, increasing their accuracy and range, among other things.
How to determine the unit level of troopers in Starship Troopers: Terran Command
Hovering the mouse cursor over the small bar just above the Control Grid underneath a selected unit's portrait will reveal the unit's level and experience points. Yellow hexagons above the unit icon indicate levels. New units have no hexagons, while level two units have two hexagons.

When do Units gets abilities in Starship Troopers: Terran Command?
Units unlock elite abilities when they reach level three. Upon reaching level three, you will be asked what elite abilities you want for that unit. Select carefully because this decision is permanent per unit. Afterward, a single, large hexagon bearing a symbol representing the selected ability replaces the hexagon levels.
How to rename units in Starship Troopers: Terran Command
In the Control Grid, you will see an icon for each selected unit. In the Control Grid, click the pen icon next to their names if you want to change them to differentiate them better.
