Who is the best character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate? (2023)

Use this character and start winning your locals!

With a roster of 60 characters, crowning one character as the best in all of Super Smash Bros Ultimate is quite the endeavor. There is a wide number of viable characters in the game, with a small grouping of those capable of winning a tournament. Some players end up using characters off the radar and still winning anyways (e.g., MKLeo with Byleth). The question then becomes, which character is the best to use regardless of skill level?

Top character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate

Multiple factors must be considered when deciding the number one best character in a game as huge as Super Smash Bros Ultimate. While some characters are very good at the pro level, others can still perform well in a casual setting.

Take a look at a fighter like Joker, for example. Yes, MKLeo was also able to take this character and win several tournaments with Joker, but nobody has to be that good to win with Joker during the average Saturday Night. Once players get a handle on playing conservatively until Arsene is activated, they can demolish their friends in a matter of seconds.

Another contender for the top spot would be Roy, as he can end stocks in a hurry. Even Roy's Jab can lead to some nasty setups, whether into Up Air or Forward Smash. To complete these setups, a base amount of skill must be acquired. So, while Roy is great at the top level, he can be difficult to master at the casual level.

The absolute best in Super Smash Bros Ultimate should really be good at all skill levels, and it's for that reason that Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 take the award home. Not every character can change themselves based on the matchup.

Furthermore, some players alternate between Pyra and Mythra based on percentage. Mythra is usually used early game to rack up damage for Pyra to finish off. Hitting Pyra anywhere around 70% damage is a huge risk, though, because Pyra will click Up B, which will be the end of that stock. Casual players also can find ways to style opponents with Mythra's quick attacks and Pyra's stock finishers.
