What is the max level cap in The First Descendant?

*pew pew pew*

The First Descendant is a free-to-play looter shooter where players can take on solo and co-op missions in their game. Released on July 2, 2024, The First Descendant actually has two separate leveling elements to it, and you'll need both to be able to build a first-class Descendant.

Max Descendant level in The First Descendant, explained

The maximum Descendant level for any one of your unlocked Descendants is level 40.

Your Descendant level is tied directly to the Descendant that you're playing. If you've passed the first couple of missions and made your way to the base, you've probably had a quick peak at your inventory screen and almost immediately clicked off it - I get it, that's a lot of information and the game isn't very intuitive for new players.

However, you will see your Descendant's level on the inventory screen, right underneath your username - your username is taken from your Steam account if that's where you installed The First Descendant from. You can also find your current level on the Descendant screen.

The maximum Mastery rank in The First Descendant

Page one of the Mastery Rank benefits in The First Descendant.

Your Mastery Rank is separate from your Descendant level. This rank only goes up to level 30, and it gives you in-game benefits, such as increasing your storage capacity, Descendant module capacity, and weapon module capacity.

It's important to level up both your Descendant Level and your Mastery Rank during gameplay. Your Descendant Level gives you small stat increases as you level up, and also awards you access to various skills for your Descendant to use.

On the other hand, your Mastery Rank enables you to upgrade your Descendant and their weapons by giving you more module slots to play with. At the start of the game, these are limited in number - you have eight module slots in total for your Descendant, and eight module slots for your weapons. The first couple of Mastery Rank levels are dedicated to upping your storage, but your module slots expand soon after that.
