In game terms, this particular build will serve you until the end of the first act in the game. However, remember that certain character aspects, such as your name and your origin traits, won't be possible to respec, so choose wisely. Best Operative Origin in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

The best Operative Origin in Rogue Trader will be dependent on how you want to play him when you hit level 16 and are able to choose the sub-archetype. Here is a detailed breakdown:

  • Astra Militarium Commander/Commisar: Great for Grant Strategist. Use one of these two and combine them with the Imperial Homeworld for maximum effect.
  • Crime Lord: Great for going down the Assassin route. Its Weapon Skill boost will be useful if you decide to make a melee-oriented Operative.
  • Sanctioned Psyker: Pick Voidborn as your homeworld and Diviner as a sub-origin to make a great spellcasting origin that's good for a Bounty Hunter but can work as any other sub-archetype.

Best Operative Characteristics in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

  • Perception: Affects Awareness, enabling your Operative to dodge enemy attacks more effectively. Besides synergizing with his active Abilities, this Characteristic makes him less prone to taking wounds inflicted by traps as well.
  • Intelligence: Alongside boosting Operative's Tech-Use skill, it provides her with additional Lore (Xenos) points, making her better at combating threats.
  • Ballistic Skill: Determines your Operative's accuracy. Since he will primarily be fighting in ranged combat, this Skill is essential to boosting his overall effectiveness and his damage output.

Best Operative Skills in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

Your Operative doesn't use many skills in his Tier 1 build in Rogue Trader. The main one is Lore (Imperium), which boosts his fighting prowess against the agents of the Imperium of Man while also possessing knowledge of the domain of Imperium. Logic is also useful as It makes a character's rational arguments more convincing and grants more dialogue options.

Best Operative Talents in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

  • Tide of Excellence: Excellent if you're looking to build a Bounty Hunter or an Assassin sub-archetype. It works by stacking Exploits on enemies, boosting your Operative's damage and penetration, which helps with their pure damage output.
  • Fresh Target: Useful especially for attacking enemies with a large Wound pool, as it deals 10+PER bonus more damage. Useful for taking down harder-to-kill targets, like enemy tanks or bosses.
  • Assisted Analysis: This is one of the bread-and-butter talents in this build because it showers down the Exploit status on enemies with the wrath of the Emperor Himself. Works especially well with the conjunction of Analyzing Enemies and Expose Weakness.
  • Instant Exposure: This simple but effective Talent reduces the cost of your Expose Weakness to 0 AP, making it castable at all times and enabling your Operative to cast more Abilities or use more Action Points in some other way.
  • Pattern Recognition: Further increases the spread of Exploits to enemies, enabling your Operative to deal even more damage by taking advantage of this status.
  • Inflict Despair: Takes advantage of Exploited enemies by further nerfing them if you inflict damage on them. In other words, if an attack doesn't kill them outright, this Talent will further cripple their MP and damage output, making them fight less effectively.
  • Offensive Pattern Prediction: Helps your Operative by reducing all incoming damage by taking their INT value into account. Very useful for all sub-archetypes as well.

Best Operative Abilities in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

  • Analyze Enemies: Combined with Expose weakness, you get a debuff on your enemies, hurting them more.
  • Expose Weakness: The Operative removes all exploits for the target to decrease the target's dodge, armor, and parry until the start of her next turn.
  • Intimidation: Profits off your Perception Characteristic as your Operative deals increased damage to enemies under this status effect.

Best Operative Items in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

The best items to choose for your Operative in Rogue Trader are those that boost her Ballistic Skill and Perception. Moreover, any items that are laser or solid are also welcome. Here is the list of the best items you can obtain in the early game of Rogue Trader that will be perfect for this Operative build:

  • Foehammer: This is more of a single-handed shotgun than a pistol, used for knocking enemies back if they approach a bit too close to Jae.
  • Sworn Protector: If you really want to hang back and pick enemies off from a distance, use this sniper rifle. Additional armor penetration will go a long way toward taking down tougher targets.
  • Modified Splinter Pistol: Applies damage over time, which is useful for taking out multiple weaker targets.
  • Elite Blast Pistol: Utilizes high penetration power for tankier enemies.

How to play Operative in Warhammer 40k Rogue Trader

Playing the Operative archetype in Rogue Trader will somewhat depend on how you prepared the class and which Abilities and Talents you picked up. But the main idea of this build is to stand back and shoot as much as possible, dealing Exploits to enemies and using the Analyze Enemies and Expose Weakness combo. Intimidation (an ability that will come later on) builds on top of that, furthering your Operative's ability to damage enemies under the effects of status.
