Wartales Whip Guide – How to make and use

Making the Whip in Wartales

The Whip is a rare item of Camp Equipment that can be made by a Tinkerer at the Workshop in your camp once you have the recipe. To get the recipe for the Whip in Wartales, you first need to purchase the Stocks recipe from Tiltren Jail (see map below). You will then need to make the Stocks and add them to your camp. Once done, you will automatically get the Whip recipe added to your compendium in the Tinkerer section.

To make the Whip in Wartales you will need 6 Leather, 6 Wood, and 4 Rope. As with other Camp accessories, you can only make one Whip. It will appear in your inventory once made and can be placed anywhere in your camp (it looks like a wooden cross). Any companion can then be assigned to the Whip. There is not an improved version of the Whip and it does not open up any new recipes.

Once you have made, placed, and assigned a companion to the Whip you can start to use it. Select the Whip and choose Use from the menu. This will open a list of companions, with any using camp equipment (that can be affected by the Whip) having their names highlighted in white. Any companion you choose will be whipped when you next camp.

Using the Whip doubles a companion’s productivity. It can be used on companions using the Workshop, Meat Drying Rack, Bee Hive, and Tanning Rack. Once selected you can click them again to unselect them. However, if you whip a companion too many times they will die (there is not a set time limit to this. You can heal a unit that gets the Whiplash injury status in the usual way). There are also no permanent benefits from using the Whip. It only affects a companion during rests in which they’re being whipped.

Making a Whip also opens up the Make an Example of Them! perk in the Knowledge section of the Compendium. Taking this increases the productivity of all units (whether being whipped or not) on turns in which a unit being whipped dies.

When to use the Whip

It is advisable only to use the Whip on expendable prisoners that you either do not want to or have refused to join your party. If you don’t have enough companions to use all of your devices when you camp, this is a profitable (if barbaric) way to make some extra resources. Using it on companions you want to keep is not advisable as whipping causes injuries and quickly deteriorates relationships.
