As you progress in the creature collection adventure RPG Yaoling Mythical Journey, you’ll soon realize the importance of Charms. However, there are many options to choose from and you only get so many chances to research them, so read on for my tier list of the best Charms in Yaoling Mythical Journey.
Charms Tier List - Yaoling Mythical Journey
Where a Charm has multiple progressions (Tier I, Tier II, etc) I have only placed it in the tier list once. These tiered charms progress similarly, adding additional damage at each level, so comparing Tier I Quake with Tier I Flame is the same as comparing Tier III Quake and Flame with each other.
Rank | Charm |
---|---|
S | Divine Seal, Illusion, Polymorph |
A | Grand Seal, Trapping Seal, Healing, Summon Golem, Suspension, Decree |
B | Enduring Seal, Deft Seal, Hulking Seal, Termination Seal, Exalt, Quake, Rend, Runic Cleave, Runic Burst, Spirit Blade, Runic Blades, Feint, Runic Abyss, Spectral Bow, Spectral Sword, Blight, Runic Plague, Rime, Runic Blizzard, Flame, Runic Blaze, Smite, Runic Lightning, Windshear, Runic Wind, Surge |
C | Minor Seal, Runic Restoration, Cleanse, Fortify, Bless, Invoke, Prism, Enrage, Silence |
D | Advanced Seal, Suppression Seal |
Note that as with any tier list, these opinions are my own based on my experience of using them in the game. If your play style differs, it may lead you to your a different list of rankings over time.
S-Tier charms
Never leave home without these charms if possible!
Divine Seal
This is the ultimate Seal and pretty hard to come by, so use them wisely. You can’t make them until your Charm house is level 6 but they do show up as quest rewards and on vendors sometimes. When used on a yaoling, it guarantees to seal the opponent.
Illusion
Not only does Illusion create two copies of your chosen ally yaoling, they can also deal and take damage while on the battlefield. This is an awesome way to start a battle, especially if you use it in a tank. They can draw fire while you get into battle while also doing some damage in the process.
Polymorph
I love this for the fun factor but also the practicality. Using Polymorph guarantees you transform the target yaoling into a rice bun which cannot attack or use any abilities. They work on bosses such as demons just as well. Also, if used on a ranged enemy, it will wander forward to the front line while it’s a rice bun, making it easy fodder for your melee yaolings.
A-Tier charms
These Charms will never steer you wrong and are useful in almost every battle. They're just a small step down from S-Tier but still essential.
Healing
While many buffing charms are situational, simple Healing charms are the best way to keep your yaolings alive during battle. As charm cooldowns are slow, it's worth taking two different Heal charms into battle to keep everyone upright. Also, yaoling healers and heal abilities suck and aren’t controllable, so it is best to have the choice in your hands.
Summon Golem
Being harried by an annoying couple of ranged units? Drop a golem on them, which will start damaging them but also taunting them, keeping them occupied long enough for your melee units to break through and deal with them.
Decree
If the enemy has a unit that you know you’ll have trouble with (an annoying special ability, for example), use Decree on it. All your yaolings will then try to attack them (like a taunt), but in addition, the unit will take extra damage while the Charm is in effect.
B-Tier charms
These Charms are standard quality, and so won’t let you down. However, they’re largely interchangeable, or a little niche.
Surge
If you like to micro-manage battles (which is fun if you have the patience) then Surge is a great Charm. It gives the selected ally yaoling an instant 50 percent of its Mana gauge, meaning its special ability will trigger twice as quickly.
Exalt
This is another good Charm for the micro-mangers among you, as it allows you to make one of your yaolings invulnerable for five seconds. This can be great in a close fight, or if a yaoling is close to firing off special but is very low on health, but I find it a little too situational.
C-Tier charms
While these Charms work OK, there are almost always better options, so why use these to take up one of your limited spaces?
Invoke
While it’s nice to boost the ATK and MAG values by 50 percent on one of your yaolings, it only lasts five seconds. With the random nature of the battles, this is unlikely to make a difference in most situations.
Silence
This stops an opposing yaoling from gaining Mana for five seconds. While this is a solid addition to your Charms in boss battles, even then I rarely find it necessary. There’s always a better option, such as dropping a Decree or Golem on them.
D-Tier charms
Avoid these charms unless you're in a tight spot and don't have another option.
Advanced Seal
While this is meant to be an advanced version of the Minor Seal, I have seen no improvement in the capture rate when using it. If anything, my luck seems to be worse with Advanced than with Minor. It may be a bug, but I completely avoid this Charm.
Suppression Seal
It's frustrating that you have to research this Seal Charm to get to the good ones but I never make them. It has a higher chance to capture lower-level opponents, which I haven’t found a single use for when compared to any other advanced Seal.
How to create Charms in Yaoling Mythical Journey
You can begin to research and create Charms as soon as you have earned some Spirit Gems. These are obtained randomly, usually after defeating demons. Simply go to the village and use the Charm House (pictured above) to make and research them. Note that to make better quality charms, you’ll also need to increase the level of the Charm House (which is done in the same menu).
Charms can also be bought from vendors in towns, given as quest and battle rewards, and found randomly on the ground as you explore.
