How to shield surf in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK)

It's like playing Legend of Zelda Pro Skater!

Some of the best experiences in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom happen in between the dungeons. Many players enjoy doing activities like shield surfing just because they're fun, even though they do nothing to progress the storyline. Fortunately, there are plenty of nice places to shield surf in the kingdom of Hyrule as well. Here's how you can do it.

Shield surfing in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom (TOTK), explained

In order to shield surf in Tears of the Kingdom, players will naturally first need a shield. It's best to use a shield that isn't particularly good for combat, though. When Link shield surfs, the durability of that shield will get used up, so it's better to do it with a Wooden Shield than to waste it on a Savage Lynel Shield.

As for actual shield surfing, players need to start by finding a high point and jumping. While in the jump, activate the shield and press the A button on the Nintendo Switch to start the surf. All together, the button presses should look like this:

  • Jump with the X button
  • Activate the shield with the ZL button
  • Press the A button to begin surfing

The best shield surfing happens on slopes with not a lot of other obstacles or enemies in the way. My favorite place to shield surf is Cape Cales, found north of Lurelin Village (coordinates: 3657, -3309, 0244); it's huge, scenic, and there aren't any enemies to be found on most of the hill.

Other good places to shield surf and their exact coordinates are listed below:

  • Mount Lanayru, beneath the Skyview Tower (coordinates: 3846, -1307, 0539)
  • Top of Death Mountain, by Sitsum Shrine (coordinates: 2450, 2526, 0884)
  • On top of the hill north of Kopeeki Drifts (coordinates: -2270, 2824, 0372)
