How does Voice Chat Work in Roblox?

Voice chat is a feature that allows users to communicate in real time with other people on Roblox using a microphone.

Roblox will employ a Proximity Chat feature for all voice chat purposes, as reported by KreekCraft. With Proximity Chat always enabled, a Roblox user must be within close distance of another Roblox user to hear each other's voice in-game. Many Roblox experiences are designed with dozens of users engaging in one server a time. So, Proximity Chat prevents all players (often upward of 20+ per experiences) from speaking over one another at once. Instead, voice chat should feel more tolerable since users will only be able to hear whomever is within close distances of their own Avatar.

Age Requirements

Leaked images appear to confirm voice chat will be available for users aged 18+, as reported by Bloxy News. All users under the age of 18 will be restricted from accessing any voice chat features built within the Roblox platform. The reasoning behind this is to ensure the safety and security of all Roblox users under the age of 18.

Only users with voice chat enabled will be able to hear one another in-game. If the user does not meet the requirements, all voice chat features will be restricted and disabled from their account.

Age/Photo Verification

All users that meet the 18+ age requirement for voice chat must verify their age with a Photo ID, as reported by Bloxy News with more leaked images. Users must upload their Photo ID to a Veratad portal on the Roblox platform using a file from their device or taking a picture of their Photo ID with a mobile device. It is easier to capture a Photo ID with a mobile device due to the camera's automatic scanning functionality.

Although not confirmed, users most likely must provide government identification that will be safely stored in the Veratad system.

What is Veratad?

Veratad is a global identity and age verification software used by companies around the world to confirm the authenticity of a Photo ID while combatting fraud. The company ensures security of all photo identification that is stored in a state of the art data center facility and monitored 24/7/365. The Roblox Company does not own Veratad in any capacity, but has instead trusted this technology to keep its user's identities safe and secure.
