How to unlock characters in Darkest Dungeon 2

Mix up your Heroes to see what works best for you!

There are a total of 12 playable characters in Darkest Dungeon 2, with one of them being a bit trickier to actually put on the team than the others. These can all be unlocked using Candles of Hope at The Living City. Unlocking each character won't require anything special, and Candles of Hope can be accumulated on different expeditions. Making a team composition that you like and works well is important, so playing around with different characters is a must. This is how you can unlock more characters in Darkest Dungeon 2.

At the start of the game, you will only have the Man-At-Arms, Highwayman, Grave Robber, and Plague Doctor unlocked. As you go on expeditions, you will gain Candles of Hope to unlock more characters. This menu is found in between expeditions and can't be accessed in the middle of one. The menu is at the start in The Living City, where all the characters can be upgraded as well. There aren't any requirements for unlocking your Heroes, so you can get any of them as soon you have the Candles for them. The full list of characters are:

  • Highwayman
  • Man-at-Arms
  • Grave Robber
  • Plague Doctor
  • Hellion
  • Runaway

  • Jester
  • Leper
  • Occultist
  • Vestal
  • Bounty Hunter

The Bounty Hunter is a unique Hero, in that he doesn't start as an option for you to put on the team. Instead, you can find his poster at inns in the game where he can be hired to replace another character. Every character you unlock also gets you an achievement, so building up your roster adds more incentives besides changing up the gameplay.
