The Pokémon Bank will be free to use in 2023, instead of an annual fee

What is Pokémon Bank?

The popular application has an annual fee of $4.99 and allows its users to transfer Pokémon between various titles. It is capable of storing up to 3,000 Pokémon from any of the Nintendo 3DS titles, such as Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. With the use of Pokémon Home, a similar application on the Nintendo Switch, it is possible for users to transfer their Nintendo-3DS generation of Pokémon to Gen VIII in Sword and Shield.

Requirements

In order to use the features of Pokémon Bank, users will have to download it from the Nintendo eShop before March 2023 when both the WiiU and Nintendo 3DS versions of the eShop close. So long as this application is purchased on a Nintendo 3DS, users will be able to use its features after the shop is closed. No purchase is necessary for the download and can even stay unused until after the shop closes to use the Pokémon Bank without its annual $4.99 fee.
