Is Chocobo GP free to play?

Forfeit all mortal possessions to the Chocobo.

Chocobo GP is a Final Fantasy cart racer game for the Nintendo Switch. It is the newest installment in the Chocobo Racing series, and many are wondering: is it a free-to-play game? Well, that is a multi-faceted question, as there is a way to play for free, but the levels of play allowed can vary amongst different levels of premium options. Let’s take a look.

Chocobo GP vs. Chocobo GP Lite

Chocobo GP has two different versions: A full version and a Lite version. The Lite version is free to download, while the full version is a full-price game. When you download the Lite version, some aspects of the game are locked, such as some character customization. You also cannot get the premium version of the prize pass in the Lite version.

Nintendo Online vs. No Subscription

Unlike with some other Nintendo games that are free-to-play, such as Fortnite, online multiplayer still requires a Nintendo online subscription. There are other ways to play, but you will realistically need to have a Nintendo Online subscription for the main game mode. This is also the only way to level up your Prize Pass in the game, so you will need it to unlock any of the content on the pass, even on the non-premium version of the pass.

In addition to all of this, there are still multiple in-game currencies, despite buying a full version of the game. It is definitely a strange balance of free and premium options.
