WWE 2K22's new control system allows players to perform extraordinary counters and persistent combinations. Payback Moves were present in prior WWE 2K entries, and it's returning with a new dimension for WWE 2K22. Payback allows players to perform specific moves to gain an advantage over their opponents, especially under heavy duress.
While there are eight different types of Payback in WWE 2K22, players can only use them during specific moments in a match. For instance, the Resiliency Payback allows players to get out of Pin Falls, Submissions, and Mini-Games easily. Players can perform a Payback Move by pressing RT/R2 and Y/Triangle together while fighting.

In WWE 2K22, players will see a prompt on the screen every time before performing Payback Moves. This creates a small window of opportunity where you can maneuver out of tough situations, especially during Pin Falls or Submissions. However, some of these Payback abilities might get players disqualified from a match, but only if the referee catches them.
Since Payback Moves depend on the situation, players can change which ability they want before heading into a specific match. For instance, classic Payback Moves like Poison Mist, Low Blow are illegal during normal matches but are allowed in Extreme Rules, Hell in a Cell, and other match formats.
