Halls of Torment is a brutal bullet hell game where you face hordes of enemies in increasingly difficult challenges. However, one thing helped me while exploring the Haunted Caverns, the first area in Halls of Torment: the Token of Pain. That said, you need to get the Token of Pain before it becomes helpful, and I am here to help you do just that.
Halls of Torment Token of Pain Guide
The Token of Pain is a two-part item in Halls of Torment. It can only be found after completing the Shrines of Pain. I was thoroughly confused as to what they do when I first got them. Fortunately, I've learned their purpose and am here to explain how to get and how to use Tokens of Pain in Halls of Torment.
Where to get Tokens of Pain in Halls of Torment
Tokens of Pain spawn in the Haunted Caverns, the first stage. To find them, locate the Bloodstained Pages, which appear as a book on an altar. This will detail two Shrines, which are really just piles of skulls. You can follow the blood trails from the Bloodstained Pages to the Shrines. I headed north of the spawn to find the Altar with the Bloodstained Pages.
Once you get close enough, purple rings will form. This can either be one large ring or three smaller rings. You'll notice a number above the Shrines. You must defeat enemies within the purple rings, which will lower the number of each enemy slain. The smaller rings will disappear once each one is full. Once you have completed the Shrine, you will be rewarded with a Token of Pain. Collect both and hold on to the end.
How to use Tokens of Pain in Halls of Torment
The Tokens of Pain have one purpose in Halls of Torment: to deal damage to the Lord of Pain, the final boss of the Haunted Caverns. When the boss spawns, a Token of Pain will attack the boss, dealing a significant portion of its health automatically. When you defeat the first form, the second Token of Pain will trigger, inflicting damage on the boss's second phase.
I highly recommend collecting both Tokens of Pain each time you play the Haunted Caverns. This makes the boss significantly easier to beat. They don't count against the items or traits you possess, so there is no reason not to get them unless you want a more difficult challenge. They also don't count as items, so you have plenty of space to equip the best items in Halls of Torment.
