In the world of Dungeons & Dragons there are numerous magical secrets, and developer Larian Studios has brought this to Baldur's Gate 3. One such secret is Soul Coins—a mysterious item you'll find repeatedly throughout the world. If you're wondering what to do with them or where to find more, keep reading.
Where to Find all Soul Coins in BG3
At the time of writing, I've located four Soul Coins in Act I of Baldur's Gate 3. There are likely more to find later on, and possibly some I've missed in my playthrough. I'll update this list once more Soul Coins are discovered, but for now, here are all the known Soul Coin locations in Baldur's Gate 3.
Dank Crypt
I've found three Soul Coins in the Dank Crypt in Baldur's Gate 3. This crypt lies beneath the ruined temple you encounter just off the shore of where the nautilid crashed. There are many dangers outside and inside the crypt, so be prepared for a fight before diving into its depths.
- South Sarcophagus
- The room with the sarcophagus at the southern end of the tomb contains the Soul Coin. It is in the right-side tomb. There are traps here, so tread carefully.
- West Sarcophagus
- The next Soul Coin can be found in the crypt's western end. The area beyond the big status contains a soul coin within one of the sarcophagi.
- Central Sarcophagus
- This Soul Coin is located in the sarcophagus containing Withers in the hidden room behind the large statue. Activating the button will bring the entombed scribes and warrior to life and start combat.
Emerald Grove
This Soul Coin is easily missed, as you must find and save an NPC from a bugbear assassin. Locate Nadira above the gate on the rock outcrop to the east, where a Tiefling is looking through a telescope. Defeat the bugbear, and with the right dialogue options, Nadira will give you the coin. Alternatively, you can let her die and loot the coin from her body or simply pickpocket it.
Other Soul Coin Locations
- Act 1
- On the shelves in the building where Anders is encountered on the Risen Road.
- Act 2
- Moonrise Tower - Buy them from Lann or kill him and collect three Soul Coins.
- A hidden room behind a bookcase in the Tollhouse.
- Act 3
- Through a hatch in Peartree's House in Lower City. A chest under the floorboards contains two Soul Coins.
- In a safe behind a painting in Raphael's room in the House of Hope.
- In the viscera on the top floor of Philgrave's Mansion.
What to do With Soul Coins in Baldur's Gate 3
Soul Coins have two purposes: they can be sold in Avernus (one of the layers of Hell, where they hold great value), or you can give them to Karlach in combat to power her Infernal Engine. Going the latter route grants Karlach an additional 1-4 fire damage to melee attacks during Rage, or when her health drops below 25%.
As these coins contain literal souls, I recommend holding on to them. While powering up Karlach can be useful, the temporary boost isn't worth it if there is a late-game use for Soul Coins. I am hoarding my Soul Coins for either a rainy day when I truly can't win combat, or some unyet seen purpose.
What are Soul Coins in Baldur's Gate 3?
Soul Coins are a coin where a mortal's personal and magical essence is bound. These are then traded amongst Devils as a type of currency for soldiers, magical items, and more. They can be used to power Infernal Engines, including the one powering Karlach's heart. Soul Coins can be made as a part of a bargain or legal contract between Devil's and their respective inhabitants.
