How to exit command console in Starfield

No, I don't want to cheat right now!

Starfield is Bethesda's RPG exploration game set among the stars. During my playthrough, I accidentally triggered the command console on more than one occasion and didn't know how to exit, bringing my exploration to a bloody halt. If you find yourself in a similar situation, you already know how frustrating it can be, but this guide will help you exit the console command quickly if you are in a similar situation again.

Which key to press to exit command console in Starfield

To exit the Starfield command console, press the tilde key (~ character on a keyboard). This is the same key you accidentally pressed to get into the command menu in the first place. This occurrence frequently happens to all players because the tilde key is located right above the Tab key, which is used for opening the Data menu; I find myself pressing the button accidentally when swapping out weapons in the game because the tilde key is close to the Q key.

Can you remap the command console key in Starfield?

Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

Unfortunately, there is no way to remap the console command key anywhere else on your keyboard because the key binding isn't in Starfield's binding options menu. I tried manually assigning the tilde key to other actions in the game to no avail. The command console key seems to be hard-coded into the game, and there is no way to move it around, at least for now. We may still get a fix for this problem by Bethesda in one of the future updates, so stay tuned for any possible news on that front.
