How to get Necrochasm in Destiny 2

A fan-favorite returns.

One of the most memorable raids in the original Destiny was Crota's End. Unveiled in The Dark Below expansion, Guardians were tasked with taking on Oryx, The Taken King's offspring Crota. In a move that surprised no one, Bungie has reprised the raid and revealed the raid Exotic Necrochasm would also be returning to Destiny 2. Here's how to obtain the Hive auto rifle.

Where to find Necrochasm in Destiny 2

Upon completing Crota's End for the first time, Guardians will acquire the Bottomless Pit quest from the raid vendor along with the Husk of the Pit auto rifle. The first step of this quest requires Guardians to kill 100 Hive enemies with Husk of the Pit and bonus progress is earned for Hive kills in Crota's End. With that complete, step two begins and Guardians will be given the Masterworked Eidolon Ally auto rifle. Once step two is active, Guardians must collect 20 Essence of the Oversoul.

Where to get Essence of the Oversoul in Destiny 2

Essence of the Oversoul will randomly drop after completing encounters in Crota's End and by completing raid-related Triumphs. Each of the following Triumphs awards one Essence of the Oversoul unless otherwise stated.

Crota's End Triumphs that reward Essence of the Oversoul

  • Perfected Truth: Complete each encounter in Crota's End without dying and without leaving the activity. (x3 Essence of the Oversoul)
  • In Unison: Complete every encounter in Crota's End with a full fireteam of the same class.
  • Conservation of Energy: Complete the "Conservation of Energy" challenge.
  • Feather-Light: Complete The Abyss encounter without letting any Guardian acquire 10 stacks of Weight of Darkness.
  • Precarious Balance: Complete the "Precarious Balance" challenge.
  • Threatening Reach: Neutralize all Swordbearers in the Oversoul Throne Bridge encounter from the opposite side of the bridge.
  • Equal Vessels: Complete the "Equal Vessels" challenge.
  • Communal Rites: Have at least one Guardian expunge Ir Yut during each round.
  • All for One: Complete the "All For One" challenge.
  • Singular Sensation: Defeat Crota with only one Guardian Enlightened at a time.
  • Broken Throne: Complete each Crota's End encounter on Master difficulty. (x2 Essence of the Oversoul)

How to get Necrochasm Exotic Catalyst in Destiny 2

Screenshot by Pro Game Guides

To obtain the Necrochasm catalyst, Guardians must complete two tasks within the Crota's Fall raid. Each involves standing on a glowing plate while having Necrochasm equipped which will make enemies spawn. You'll know you're on the right plate when you see the message Crota's minions appear.

  • The first plate is located in The Bridge encounter.
    • Cross the bridge like you normally would and head to the right instead of going up the stairs where you'll see the tell-tale glowing green plate. Stand on it with Necrochasm equipped.
    • A 90-second timer will appear. Multiple Gatekeepers and Hive Swords will appear. Your objective is to slay all of the Gatekeepers before the timer runs out. Should you succeed, the message Crota's minions are defeated will appear. Failure will prompt the message Crota's minions vanish.
    • Don't worry if you fail as you can reattempt this as many times as you need.
  • The second plate is found following the Ir Yut encounter.
    • Before triggering the Crota encounter, head to the back right of the room to find the plate.
    • Like the first plate encounter, a 90-second timer will appear. The objective is the same, however, Swordbearers will spawn as well. Guardians must defeat the Swordbearers to claim their namesake weapons and then tackle the Gatekeepers. A Swordbearer will spawn in the middle of the room in addition to the left and right sides.
    • Again, you can attempt this encounter as many times as needed, so don't fret if your fireteam doesn't get it right away.

With those two encounters complete, Guardians will be awarded the Necrochasm catalyst. Like many other catalysts in Destiny 2, Guardians must complete an additional objective to equip it. In this case, 35 Essence of the Oversoul must be collected. Thankfully, any leftover Essence of the Oversoul will carry over.

What does the Necrochasm Exotic Catalyst do?

The Necrochasm catalyst adds the Outlaw Perk to the auto rifle where precision kills greatly decrease the reload time. I'm on the fence about whether Outlaw is worth all of this hassle but one could argue that if Guardians are planning on running Crota's End regularly, this will be more of a passive unlock rather than a targeted farm.
