How to call someone on Roblox – RDC23 showcases upcoming Roblox Connect feature

Ring ring, it's me!

The 2023 Roblox Developer Convention is well underway and the breadth of this year's announcements continues to grow. In the convention's opening Keynote, Roblox CEO David Baszucki showcased Roblox Connect, a new immersive, player-to-player communication feature that's set to debut on the platform in the coming months. With Roblox Connect, users will be able to call and chat with their friends without ever needing to leave the Roblox app, and will be able interact with them in various virtual worlds using both avatar voice chat and face tracking. For a quick overview of what else we know about this feature so far, continue reading below.

How to call someone on the Roblox app

At the time of this article's publication, the calling feature on Roblox is not yet available, so everything stated online is still very much based on beta information, but it's estimated that calling on Roblox will be fairly similar to normal phone calling. In the short video presentation made by Buszucki and Garima Sinha (Roblox's Senior Director of Product), a notification feature is shown in which players are alerted at the top of their screen that they're receiving a phone call, along with the ability to use Roblox Connect-specific experiences to talk and explore within.

Inside these experiences, players use voice chat, and have the ability to partake in virtual, avatar-based FaceTiming using facial animation/face tracking features. Three different camera angles can be used as well, which allows users to control how they want to chat. As expected, this feature is exclusive to users over the age of 13+ for safety reasons.

It's never mentioned during the Keynote, but I personally would assume that calling will only be able to be done between mutual friends, meaning you wouldn't be able to call just any player. It's also not mentioned whether or not these conversations will be monitored in any way, but with Roblox's new voice chat filtering system that was also revealed at RDC, it could be a possibility.

End

That's all the information we have for the time being regarding Roblox's new Connect feature. When this feature releases, I will update this article or create a new one accordingly!
