Starfield in Their Footsteps Choice Guide

Finding the Scorpius.

While the sandbox nature of sci-fi RPG Starfield has won a lot of players over, I’m an absolute sucker for what they’ve done with the main storyline. It makes you answer difficult moral questions, often seemingly with no right answers, while also keeping the action and tension intact. This comes to a head in the main mission In Their Footsteps, so read on for how to face those choices in Starfield.

In Their Footsteps mission choices - Starfield

After visiting Pilgrim’s Rest and then solving the Scorpion’s Sting puzzle on Hyla II, you’ll be directed to head to the last star of the Scorpius constellation. When you arrive in orbit you’ll find the Hunter’s ship waiting for you. He’s as surprised as you are to be discovered, but more surprises await. You cannot engage the Scorpius in combat, so your conversation choices aren’t relevant to the storyline. The Emissary is also on board and you’re invited to join them to finally find the answers you seek.

While you get a few dialogue choices before boarding, they all choices lead to you boarding and going on board. After the Hunter introduces you, you’ll then talk to the Emissary and the Hunter. Again, despite some shocking revelations, the dialogue choices in this conversation will all lead to the same outcome

Both the Hunter and the Emissary want you to join forces with them, with the Emissary proposing a truce while you decide who to throw your support behind. However, there is also the option to go it alone. Once the conversation ends, you will have two optional missions:

  • Talk to the Hunter
  • Talk to the Emissary

I really enjoyed these conversations, as they give you more information to help you decide who to join sides with (if anyone). However, you don’t get any XP or items from having them, so if you’re not fussed with more dialogue you can just leave the Scorpius. Either way, as you leave, the Emissary will give you a Moon Base Key and you’ll begin two new main story missions, Unearthed and Final Glimpes.

So, in conclusion, the choices you make during In Their Footsteps will not affect the main storyline. However, you’re going to have to make a serious choice soon and this mission gives you all the moral roleplaying information you’ll need to make that decision.
