Is Lords of the Fallen open world?

Whether you're looking to play Lords of the Fallen solo or play with friends in co-op, you will be awed by the landscapes around you. While most visuals in this game give off a dark and ominous vibe, you will be able to go between two different realms, each with varying aesthetics. Does Lords of the Fallen have an open world?

Lords of the Fallen is a bit different than Elden Ring in that it is only a semi-open world. While you will have plenty of opportunities to explore and take different paths in the world around you, you will be led by the main story and quests. In other words, you won't have total freedom to wander, but you will be able to adventure several different locations as you progress through the story and dual-world versions of those same locations.

Lords of the Fallen Dual Worlds, explained

Although you won't have total freedom as you would in a completely open-world game, Lords of the Fallen does offer a unique feature in which you transition between two worlds—Axiom and Umbral. Axiom is the world of the living, while Umbral is the world of the dead. While the worlds are mirrored, each one will have different opportunities and dangers to face, and you will have to switch between the two to navigate past some obstacles or progress the story.

While you will mostly be traversing through the living world of Axiom, you will have no choice but to explore the world of the dead, Umbral, as you will undoubtedly run into obstacles along your path. Umbral is where you will have to solve various puzzles to clear the way forward. However, you may also come across more dangers in this darker realm.

Even in a more linear world, the landscapes of Lords of the Fallen will still be intriguing to explore, especially with the option to switch between the Axiom and Umbral realms. Having a semi-open world also offers more grace and less confusion for players new to this type of game genre, like me!
