Honkai Star Rail's Jingliu and Topaz are two of the game's most enticing characters to roll for. Both have amazing designs and are potentially meta-defining for Star Rail's most difficult content. However, both characters are five-star units, making it nearly impossible to get both with your hard-earned Stellar Jade. Most players will only be able to get one or the other due to how close their release windows are. Which one should you roll for then? I have the answer for you below.
Should you choose Jingliu or Topaz in Honkai Star Rail?
Both Jingliu and Topaz are powerful characters in their own right, but out of the two, I recommend rolling for Topaz due to her extensive versatility and longevity as a unit. The reality of playing a gacha game is that DPS-focused units tend to be power-creeped and replaced after some time. This is because new characters are released that do what the old did, better, easier, and faster, and this is most commonly done to DPS-focused characters.
Jingliu vs Topaz
Jingliu is a powerful Ice Destruction character who deals massive damage and is quite tanky due to her typing. For most players, Ice DPS characters are in high demand due to Honkai Star Rail still being relatively young in its gacha lifespan. As such, you'll find that many other guides recommend rolling for Jingliu over Topaz due to her damage. While this isn't necessarily wrong, as Jingliu will certainly be a powerful asset to your account's power, she is still a DPS unit and is a target for eventual replacement. Her only role is to deal big damage, and she's really good at it.
Topaz, however, is a Fire Hunt DPS that offers more than just massive damage. Topaz is similar to Kafka in that she provides a significant buff to a specific type of attack. In Topaz's case, she buffs the power of Follow-up attacks, meaning that her value is much higher in the long run. Topaz also deals massive damage on her own and will likely be used by many players as their main DPS. However, even after a stronger Fire DPS character is released, she will remain a valuable unit to have in teams that have access to lots of Follow-up attacks. This ultimately makes Topaz more valuable as she will always be a cornerstone for these types of teams.
Ultimately, who you roll for is up to you. If you really like Jingliu, then roll for her; she's far from weak and will be viable for a very long time. Still, if longevity is more valuable to you, then Topaz is, without a doubt, the best pick of the two.
