Can you face the flames?

Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is full of tough bosses, including one that kicked my butt several times: Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flames. Here is how to locate Midra, Lord of Flames in the Shadow Realm.

How to find Midra Lord of Frenzied Flames in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flames is found in Midra's Manse. To reach this location, you must go through the Darklight Catacombs, which can be reached from the Shadow Keep. Progressing through this dungeon takes you to the Abyssal Woods.

Once in the Abyssal Woods, use the map below to make your way through this area. Note that Torrent is too scared to be summoned in this area, so you have to travel on foot. Along the path, you'll find several Sites of Grace, and the map fragment reveals this area. Beware the enemies with the large glowing sphere heads, as they cannot be killed and will drive you mad almost instantly. Use the bushes to crouch and sneak around them.

You can go to the Site of Grace in the northern part of the Abyssal Woods, but this is optional. The southern path leading you to Midra's Manse is along the river, though part is blocked, and you must go uphill to get around it. Follow the warnings on the ground to stay on the correct path. Eventually, you'll arrive at a large building with several kneeling corpses in front of it. This is Midra's Manse.

Upon entering Midra's Manse, use the Site of Grace for a respawn point, then strike the painting on your left to reveal a hidden illusion wall. Go down the new path, and you'll eventually find yourself in a dining room. Be careful of the striking flames as you go around the table. Defeat the enemies in the dining area and head to the ruined library area. Navigate the maze until you encounter a lever and pull it. This opens a new path behind you and reveals a ladder that you must climb.

The ladder leads to the upper area, and you'll need to progress until you find another ladder. Climb the ladder again to find yourself higher still. Cross the precarious bridges, noting the secret doorway on the right in the dark, which leads to a cookbook. Despite my suspicions, none of the bridges collapse, so you can cross however you want to find a Site of Grace.

Climb the ladder down past this Site of Grace and turn around to open the door behind you, revealing a shortcut to the entrance to Midra's Manse. Attack the large painting to the right of this door and reveal another illusion wall. Enter the new tunnel, head up the stairs, and climb the ladder in front of you. You'll find a lever at the top that reveals a secret path back down the ladder and in the lower area of the library you were just at.

Enter the secret tunnel and follow the path until you reach another Site of Grace. All that's left is to continue along until you encounter the raving madman Midra himself. Kill the old man to trigger a gruesome cutscene and unleash Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame.

How to beat Midra Lord of Frenzied Flame in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flames appears weak and frail, but he is anything but. Ensure you are prepared before this fight because Midra hits extremely hard; I have died numerous times because I underestimated him. Here are some tips:

  • Use Scadutree Fragments.
  • Use summons.
  • Focus on heavy stagger attacks.
  • Bleed and physical damage is effective.
  • Use fire resistance.
  • Use Bloodhound Step to avoid attacks.

Midra's attacks have slow wind-ups but happen fast once he uses them. During his second phase, his attacks leave behind a trail of fire, which can heavily damage you. The best strategy is to be patient and dodge his attacks, then strike during openings. Spirits you summon draw his aggro, which can give you time to heal or let you get an attack in while Midra is distracted.

Midra the Dread has two phases, transitioning into the second when his health bar falls below three-fourths. During this, he casts the Flames of Frenzy, engulfing the entire room in flames. However, you can interrupt this if you have inflicted enough stagger damage before the transformation by breaking his stagger with a powerful jump attack. Here is Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flames attacks.

  • Phase 1:
    • Triple Strike: Midra attacks three times with his sword. Dodge each attack as he swings.
    • Spinning Attack: Midra spins twice while approaching you, slashing with his sword. The second spin may be delayed or not happen at all. Carefully roll toward Midra to dodge the attack.
    • Flame of Frenzy: Midra launches flames in a cone in front of him. Dodge to avoid this attack.
  • Phase 2:
    • Lunging Attack: Midra lunges forward leaving a trail of flame behind him. Dodge to the side as he lunges and keep away from the flames.
    • Trail of Flame: Midra activates his sword, engulfing it in flames and shoots fire at you. These attacks create a trail of fire as well. Dodge to the side to avoid them and his sword strike.
    • Explosive Flames: Midra creates an AoE ball of flame that explodes, engulfing a large area in flame. Sprint away from the ball to avoid getting hit.
    • Slam Attack: Midra leaps into the air and slams his sword into you, pinning you in a grab. Dodge to the side, but be prepared because spikes will shoot from the ground if he misses. Dodge again to avoid the spikes.

Midra Lord of Frenzied Flame Drops & Rewards - Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree

Defeating Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame rewards you with several Runes, but more importantly, the Remembrance of the Lord of Frenzied Flame. Take this to Enia Finger Reader in the Roundtable Hold to trade it in for either the Greatsword of Damnation or Midra's Flame of Frenzy incantation. If you duplicate the Remembrance at a Walking Mausoleum, you can acquire both.
