All Factions in Age of Mythology: Retold

AND THEN ALONG CAME ZEUS—

The creators of the Age of Empires series invite you to step into a world where gods, monsters, and mortals clash in battles of mythic proportions. In Age of Mythology: Retold, players will be able to choose from four factions, known as Pantheons in the game, to wield the power of the gods.

Every Pantheon in Age of Mythology: Retold

When choosing the faction you want to play in Age of Mythology: Retold, it's important to consider your playstyle and the bonuses you get by playing each faction. Back when Age of Empires II was at its most popular, we had a tier list for the best Civilizations in the game. With 45 civilizations in the game, that was needed.

Thankfully, that's not the case here. Age of Mythology: Retold only has four factions at the moment, though a fifth faction is due to be released sometime in the future if you have the Premium version of the game to access the DLC. Thankfully, there is an option to upgrade your game to the Premium version later down the line.

The Greek Pantheon

The Greek Pantheon in Age of Mythology: Retold offers a versatile and familiar experience for players, particularly those who enjoyed Age of Empires II. Known for its balanced gameplay and powerful units, the Greek Pantheon offers a decent amount of offense and defense, making it a strong choice for players of all skill levels.

Greek Faction Units

The Greek faction in Age of Mythology: Retold is known for its strong and versatile units, which include the Hoplites. These infantry units are the backbone of the Greek army and are more powerful and slightly more expensive than their counterparts in other pantheons. They excel at countering cavalry but are vulnerable to ranged attacks.

You may also like the Toxotes. These archers are strong against infantry but must be protected from fast-moving units like cavalry. Their effectiveness increases when fighting in groups.

Personally, I enjoyed the Hippeus unit. This is a Greek cavalry unit that may be costly but they're effective against ranged units and siege weapons. They can quickly strike and retreat, making them valuable in disrupting enemy strategies.

Greek Wonder

The Greeks also benefit from a unique Wonder building that provides significant advantages in the later stages of the game. The Greek Wonder advances the Greek Pantheon to the Wonder Age, and provides these bonuses:

  • +1 Favor per second.
  • -50% cost and -90% cooldown on God Powers.
  • +50% Attack Damage and Hitpoints for Myth Units and Titans.
  • +15% Speed for Myth Units and Titans.
  • The Titan Gate can be rebuilt every 10 minutes.

Why you should choose the Greek Pantheon

The Greek Pantheon is an excellent choice for new players and veterans alike. Its familiar mechanics and well-rounded units offer a solid foundation for any playstyle. The Greeks are particularly forgiving for newcomers, as their powerful infantry and adaptable myth units allow for effective strategies in both early and late-game scenarios.

The Egyptian Pantheon

The Egyptian Pantheon in Age of Mythology: Retold is well-suited for players who prefer a defensive playstyle, focusing on fortifications and a powerful late-game presence. With unique mechanics that emphasize resource management and empowered units, the Egyptians can become an unstoppable force as the game progresses.

Egyptians Faction Units

The Egyptians excel at controlling the battlefield through well-planned defenses and powerful late-game units. I've highlighted some of their best below.

The Pharaoh is an important hero unit for the Egyptians. They empower buildings, heal units, and are highly effective against myth units. The Pharaoh can significantly boost resource income, construction speed, and the effectiveness of military buildings. Should a Pharaoh fall, a successor will take their place.

The Axeman is strong against infantry units, but you'll need to be aware of their vulnerability to other unit types, especially ranged units. This unit is particularly useful in early-game defense and can be transitioned out for more powerful Migdol Stronghold units in the Heroic Age.

Then there's the Chariot Archer, a fast, mounted ranged unit that excels at dealing with infantry. While they struggle against cavalry, buildings, and siege weapons, their speed and versatility make them a key component of the Egyptian army in the mid to late game.

These are just three of the many units and heroes you'll come across if you play the Egyptian faction in Age of Mythology: Retold.

The Egyptian Wonder

The Egyptians also have access to the Egyptian Wonder. Building this pushes the Egyptian Pantheon into the Wonder Age, and gives players:

  • +1 Favor per second.
  • -50% cost and -90% cooldown for God Powers.
  • +50% Attack Damage and Hitpoints for Myth Units and Titans.
  • +15% Speed for Myth Units and Titans.
  • The Titan Gate can be rebuilt every 10 minutes.

Why you should choose the Egyptian Pantheon

The Egyptian Pantheon is ideal for players who enjoy a methodical and defensive approach to the game. Their strong early defenses, combined with the ability to dominate in the later stages with powerful units and siege weaponry, make them a formidable choice. The Egyptians also offer a unique strategic depth with their reliance on Gold, careful use of the Pharaoh, and the passive generation of Favor through Monuments. For players who are patient and strategic, the Egyptian Pantheon can provide a rewarding and powerful gameplay experience.

The Norse Pantheon

The Norse faction in Age of Mythology: Retold is an aggressive faction that thrives on high-damage combat, earning Favor through battle. Their ability to quickly set up mobile camps and their infantry’s construction capabilities make them formidable on the offensive, although their buildings are weaker compared to those of the other pantheons. Norse players excel by pressuring opponents with tough soldiers and strong Myth Units, while their mobile dropsites and cheap buildings allow for efficient resource management and fast expansion.

Norse Faction Units

The Norse rely on powerful, high-damage infantry units to pressure their opponents, while their naval and siege units add further versatility to their attacks.

Units such as the Berserk human unit, which is a lightly armored infantry unit, have strong attacks. Berserks are effective against melee units but weak against ranged units. Like other Norse infantry, they can also construct buildings.

The Dragon Ship is another excellent choice. This is a warship equipped with siege weaponry. Dragon Ships are excellent at taking down arrow ships and buildings, making them a crucial part of Norse naval dominance.

Finally, check out the Throwing Axeman. This unit uses a ranged attack but is still considered an infantry unit. It is effective against other infantry but weak against other types of units, particularly ranged units.

The Norse Wonder

The Norse Wonder building gives players these benefits:

  • +1 Favor per second.
  • -50% cost and -90% cooldown for God Powers.
  • +50% Attack Damage and Hitpoints for Myth Units and Titans.
  • +15% Speed for Myth Units and Titans.
  • The Titan Gate can be rebuilt every 10 minutes.

Why you should choose the Norse Pantheon

The Norse Pantheon is perfect for players who favor aggressive, fast-paced gameplay. With strong infantry and the ability to quickly set up mobile camps, Norse players can keep constant pressure on their opponents. Their ability to summon myth units during battle adds an element of surprise, while their robust naval and siege options ensure dominance across land and sea. Although their fortifications are weaker, the Norse make up for this with their relentless offensive capabilities. For players who enjoy a highly aggressive, combat-focused style, the Norse Pantheon is the perfect choice.

The Atlantean Pantheon in Age of Mythology: Retold

Atlantean players can adapt quickly to their opponents, thanks to their cheap and fast-recharging God Powers. Their Citizen units gather resources efficiently without the need for dropsites, giving them a strong economic advantage. Atlanteans can convert any of their units, even Citizens, into heroes, allowing them to create highly adaptable armies. This unique ability, combined with dedicated counter-units from the Counter Barracks, makes the Atlanteans a strategic powerhouse.

Atlantean Faction Units

The Atlanteans use a diverse range of units that excel in specific situations, making their armies highly adaptable. Players can use a combination of standard and counter-units to effectively respond to enemy strategies.

No matter what, you should always have an Oracle. These unique scout units offer a significant line of sight when stationary. Although Oracles are slow and weak in combat, their ability to gather vision over a wide area makes them valuable for reconnaissance and strategic planning. They also passively generate Favor, further bolstering the Atlantean economy. Do not place Oracles next to each other. Oracles cannot work together, and only one will generate Favor, rather than all three.

Another one of the Atlantean's best units is the Bireme — a versatile warship that excels in naval combat, particularly against close-combat ships. The bireme's superior maneuverability and ramming capabilities make it a crucial component of Atlantean dominance.

Finally, try the Turma. This mounted javelineer is a specialist counter-unit, designed to defeat ranged soldiers. With exceptional speed and front armor, the Turma can effectively neutralize ranged threats but is vulnerable to melee and other types of units.

Atlantean Wonder

As with the other Pantheon, the Atlantean faction has its own wonder building. Once you build the Atlantean Wonder, you'll receive:

  • +1 Favor per second.
  • 50% cost and -90% cooldown for God Powers.
  • +50% Attack Damage and Hitpoints for Myth Units and Titans.
  • +15% Speed for Myth Units and Titans.
  • The Titan Gate can be rebuilt every 10 minutes.

Why you should choose the Atlantean Pantheon

The Atlantean Pantheon is ideal for players who enjoy a highly adaptable playstyle that focuses on strategic depth and versatility. Their ability to quickly turn regular units into heroes, coupled with their resource-efficient Citizens, provides a flexible economy and military.

Atlanteans thrive on precise counterplay, making them perfect for players who like to react to their opponent's strategies and mix in specialized units to gain the upper hand. With their fast-recharging and cheap God Powers, the Atlanteans can maintain pressure throughout the game, while their powerful Myth Units and unique Wonder bonuses make them formidable in the late game.
