What is DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG in Apex Legends?

Players on PC may run into an error stating the application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This basically means that Apex Legends could not connect with the hardware and typically this refers to the Graphics Card.

DXGI stands for Direct X Graphics Infrastructure. Direct X basically acts as the middleman between NVIDIA's GPU and Apex Legends. Therefore, when you get this error, it means Direct X is having trouble forming the connection between the two, leading to an inability to run the game. Respawn has stated that they closely work with NVIDIA to ensure this does not happen, but sometimes errors can slip through and you'll need to troubleshoot them.

Unfortunately, there isn't much you can do to completely fix the error with an issue like this. It is a complicated exchange between the game's software and your hardware, and the average user cannot access this exchange. However, you can do something to work around the issue until Respawn and NVIDIA can work out a solution on their end.

Respawn has recommended that players who experience this error roll back to an earlier driver for their GPU. They have found that often the issue comes from their game's software not agreeing with the latest NVIDIA Drivers.

How to roll back your PC drivers to a previous update

To roll back your drivers to a previous update, all you have to do is locate your Graphics card in the Device Manager then open its Properties window. Once in the Properties window, there is a tab called Driver, and under that tab is a button that states Roll Back Driver. This will reinstall the previously installed Driver.

If you are still experiencing the error after rolling back your Driver, Respawn has recommended that you open a support ticket with them. They would like to know what Graphics Card you have, what driver version is installed, and when this error occurs in the game.

So there you have it, that is how you fix the DXGI error 'device hung.' This should temporarily fix the issue and allow you to play Apex Legends while Respawn and NVIDIA work to resolve the issue.
