Soft Step Trial BG3 Guide

A trial in the name of Shar.

While visiting the Gauntlet of Shar in Baldur's Gate 3, you'll come across a few trials that can be completed to obtain essential Umbral Gems. Among them is the Soft Step Trial, which is one of the trickiest challenges (it took quite awhile for me to complete). Here's how you can complete the Soft Step Trial in BG3.

The Soft Step Trial is located inside a room (X: -798, Y: -753) at the Gauntlet of Shar. To enter this trial, pay a blood sacrifice at the altar outside the room. Once inside, sneak past the shadow guards to acquire a key that unlocks a door on the top floor. While it sounds easy, this trial is exceptionally tricky to complete.

Should you let Shadowheart do the Soft Step Trail in BG3?

The Self Same Trial, Faith Leap Trial, and others at the Gauntlet of Shar can all be completed by Shadowheart. Because she is preacher of Shar, I recommend going this route; doing so will win Shadowheart's approval. You can tag along with your custom character, but for the Soft Step Trial, it is best to allow Shadowheart to complete it alone.

How to get the Soft Step Trial Key in BG3

The Soft Step Trail is a maze-like challenge where you have to obtain the Soft Step key without being noticed by the shadows. I recommend completing this challenge in Turn-Based mode as it allows your character to hide much more efficiently. Inside the maze, you need to find a lever that opens a stone wall—this is where you'll find the Soft Step key.

Start the trial by entering the maze from the second door, which is closer to the lever. You will face a couple of shadows here, so use the Invisibility spell to move undetected, and position yourself close to the southern wall inside the maze. Once the environmental turn is complete, navigate around the shadows and pull the lever to open the wall on the next turn, at which time you can move in to get the key.

After collecting the key, move to the wall on the western side of the maze, where you'll find a small door that leads to the upper floor of the room. Be careful, as there is a shadow guard patrolling this side of the maze; it's best to wait until the shadow moves away before making a run for the stairs.

Get inside the room to collect the Umbral Gem from Shar's altar, completing the Soft Step Trial. You can use the transporter in the room to teleport back to the starting point.
