Baldur’s Gate 3 – Can you Respec your Character?

Can it be done?

Managing your characters' progress is one of the most important parts of Baldur's Gate 3. After all, stats determine everything from conversation to combat. When I decided I wanted to change my companion's class, I learned the process wasn't quite as simple as I expected. Here's everything you need to know to respec characters in Baldur's Gate 3.

Can you Respec in BG3?

Yes, you can respec in Baldur's Gate 3. To do it, you need to recruit a special NPC named Withers. He's an undead skeleton that, once unlocked, will become a permanent member of your Camp. In addition to respecing characters, he can revive dead party members and provide you with Hirelings—characters who will temporarily join your party. They're not quite as interactive as your faithful companions, but if you need a certain class, they'll do in a pinch.

Withers is located in the Dank Crypt—a section of the temple ruins found in Act One. This is one of the first areas you come across, and is just down the road from the Roadside Cliffs waypoint. You'll need to make your way inside the ruins, potentially fighting through a few enemies along the way.

Once you enter the Dank Crypt, make your way through the Heavy Oak Doors to your left and head to the northwest corner of the room (X:-300 Y:-234). You'll find a button next to a suspiciously archway-shaped section of the wall, pictured above. Press it and the wall will come down, but be warned: the skeletons lying around the room will jump up and turn hostile.

After you've defeated them, head inside the small room you've discovered. Interact with the Richly Adorned Sarcophagus, and Withers the skeleton will emerge. At first, I thought this would be a boss fight, but Withers does not respond to attacks and will never turn hostile. Feel free to answer his questions however you wish. He will later show up at your camp.

To respec a character in Baldur's Gate 3, simply talk to Withers in your Camp and select the "Can you help me change my class?" dialogue option. Respecing costs 100 gold each time.

Once you choose this option, you'll enter a new screen where you can change your class, select new cantrips (if applicable), and reset your Ability Points. Keep in mind your party won't be available in this screen; only the character who speaks to Withers can be respeced. In addition, you can select the Cancel Respec button at the top right of the screen to exit the menu.
