I've spent a lot of time playing Baldur's Gate 3 and thoroughly enjoyed every hour I've put in. However, I've encountered my fair share of glitches, bugs, and errors, especially with the recent addition of the Magic Mirror and not being able to use it. Most recently, I've had trouble with the Baldur's Gate 3 Error Code 516. If you've run into this same error, I'm here to help.
How to fix Error Code 516 in Baldur's Gate 3
There are two primary ways to solve Error Code 516 in Baldur's Gate 3. There is a temporary fix for deleting any unnecessary saves, as the error appears to be related to how many and how large your save files are. However, the options below are your best bet to fix the 516 Error Code.

BG3 Trader Fix
Discovered by Thefredtohergeorge on Reddit, you can fix the issue through interacting with the in-game traders. Speak to the trader where you first noticed the issue but do not choose the dialogue option to trade. Use the suggested button to initiate the trade, then purchase any cheap item. Leave the trading, end the conversation, and save the game.
Clear Space on your C Drive
You must ensure you have enough space in your C Drive for your Baldur's Gate 3 save file. As you continue to play and your save file grows larger, it becomes evident that you need more room. Issues may occur if you do not have enough room on your C Drive for your save file. Clearing space in this area will help your BG3 game.
Change Save Location
Alternatively, you can move your save files for Baldur's Gate 3 and remove the need to clear space on your C Drive, as discovered by Ruzihm in a Steam Discussion post. Moving your file to a different drive with more space will also fix the 516 Error Code. Here is how to move your Baldur's Gate 3 save directory.
- Open a command prompt as admin.
- Run the following command.
- mklink /d "C:\full\path\to\original\Appdata\Local\Larian Studios" "W:\cool\path\here\Larian Studios"
Your save files for Baldur's Gate 3 will be moved and preserved in a drive where you have more storage. It may be more work than clearing out your C Drive, but it does prevent you from possibly having to delete other games, save files, and data. The choice is yours, but Baldur's Gate 3 deserves to be seen through from beginning to end, so get your save file working!
