There are a whole lot of excellent items you should absolutely go out of your way to pick up in Act 1 of Baldur's Gate 3. One of the best pieces you can get pretty early is the Warped Headband of Intellect— a headpiece that brings the wearer's intelligence up to 17. I found this item to be extremely helpful in my playthroughs of BG3.
Warped Headband of Intellect Location
In Act 1, you will be tasked with either clearing out the goblins in order to save the Druid's Circle, or siding with the enemy and overrunning the Tieflings and Druids alongside Minthara. Regardless of which side you choose, you can get the Headband of Intellect.
Look for a destroyed tavern in the Blighted Village (X:5, Y:366), where you will find three ogres standing around eating the remnants of a halfling. One of these ogres — Lump the Enlightened — is suspiciously eloquent and intelligent. He became smart with a little help from this particular item, which you will need to take from him by force. There may be a way to pickpocket this item from him, but my rogue build was not high enough level in stealth just yet.
How to Defeat the Three Ogres
This is not an easy battle for anyone on any difficulty; you will need some great defense and strong hits to take down the three ogres. I have found several strategies that help out, however. Regardless of level, it's an excellent idea to use items that make the terrain more difficult for your foes; grease, ice, and other such effects will slow them down quite a bit, making it easier to move in, strike, and move back out of range again.
You do not want to be within arms reach of any of these guys; they hit very hard. Using ranged attacks such as Astarion's bow, Shadowheart's magic, or even bows and crossbows with melee units like Lae'zel and Karlach are a good idea.
While you want to play keep-away with these guys for as long as possible, keep in mind all the pillars that hold up the second floor of this building are breakable. As such, standing up there isn't a great idea (unless you fancy taking a whole bunch of fall damage and possibly ending up prone).
One last tip that's great for any battle you'll take on: always have a candle in your inventory. Place it on the ground in front of your characters during battle, then have them dip their weapons in the flame. This will add a little extra damage to every hit you make, without taking up much inventory weight.
