Since its release, Battlefield 2042 has received criticism and backlash from the community. Players are furious over the state of the game and wondering in which direction their favorite franchise is heading.
According to one of the industry's most trusted leakers, Tom Henderson, EA is "looking at all the options" to revive the game. This includes the possibility of the game, or a game element, going free-to-play sometime in the future.
The news, or let's say rumors, about Battlefield 2042 going free-to-play are emerging at a time when the game is seeing a huge decline in its player-base. If we look at last week's Steam data, BF2042 saw a peak player count of 7,911 whereas BFV had an overwhelming 20,688 players.

If we look at the past, Battlefield V had a solid Battle Royale game mode called Firestorm which unfortunately was short-lived. More than a year later, Call of Duty came out with Warzone, which became a massive hit and still is one of the most streamed, watched, and played FPS games.
It would be no wonder to see EA going down the same road. A free-for-all game mode will definitely be good for players and publishers alike. But first, BF2042 developers will have to fix and polish their unfinished game in order for this strategy to work.
