Though Seasons didn't technically begin until Season of the Outlaw with the release of the Forsaken expansion, they've been retroactively tracked since the release of Destiny 2 in 2017. Seasons typically last around 90 days and introduce a new story beat alongside a new Season Pass and Seasonal Activity.
What season is Destiny 2 on?
The current Season in Destiny is Season 22, or Season of the Witch. It began on August 22, 2023, and is the third Season under the Lightfall expansion. It will run until November 28, 2023, when Season of the Wish will begin.

The current season's story continues the glacial pace of this year's story content. Following a plan set forth by Savathun and enacted by her Ghost, Immaru, players must work with Eris Morn and Ikora Rey to stop Xivu Arath, the Hive God of War. Despite how it was rolled out, Season of the Witch boasts some of the most important moments in series history, even if they're hidden in Lore Books or secret cutscenes.
The seasonal activity has three components. Savathun's Spire has a fireteam working their way to the top of the aforementioned building to unravel Savathun's secrets. It is a fixed pseudo dungeon, complete with hidden chests.
The Altars of Summoning harkens back to the Court of Oryx from Destiny. Players load into a perpetual activity where they can make up offers that determine the difficulty of the encounter. It's a great way to farm for gear and is the core component of the story's tithe system.
The final component is the Imbaru Engine, which opens up later in The Bladed Path quest. This is a series of tests devised by Savathun herself and hides what may be the key to stopping the Witness.
