The Memento slot in Destiny 2 is the slot for special vanity items known as Mementos. These Mementos were introduced in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen expansion. Insert a Memento into the slot on your shaped weapon, and you will have a plethora of personalization options open to you.

However, these Mementos don't grant you any additional power. They are just cosmetic items, like the different Shaders that you come across in Destiny 2. Memento slots aren't present on all weapons. Only the ones that can be crafted or reshaped at the Enclave will have a Memento slot in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen.
You can get a Memento for your Memento slot by participating in the playlist activities on your directory. For now, it's just Gambit, but Nightfalls and Trials of Osiris should also have Mementos associated with them. And each of these activities drops a unique Memento for your Memento slot in Destiny 2. So, if you don't require a Gambit weapon to flaunt that Gambit aesthetic, you just need the Gambit Memento.
