How does Augmenting Ancient Items work in Diablo 3?

Make your good gear even better.

The start of a new season can be overwhelming in Diablo 3, and there are plenty of ways for players to fine tune their builds. Something players won't want to overlook is augmenting their items, as it's a way for their already strong gear to get even stronger.

How to Augment Ancient Items in Diablo 3

Ancient items and their Primal counterparts along with Sets are among the strong pieces of gear in Diablo 3, and players can take them to even higher levels by augmenting them. This is done by combining gems in Kanai's Cube, but it's a little more complicated than that.

Players need at least a level 30 Legendary Gem, and these are obtained and leveled up by completing Greater Rifts upon reaching level 70. Having a high Paragon level will be essential to leveling up these Gems, so it could be something that takes some time.

Once players have the required Legendary Gem, they'll have to combine it with either three Flawless Rubies, Topazes, Emeralds, or Amethysts. Combining these with a piece of gear will increase the stats on the gear. Ruby increases Strength, Topazes increases Intelligence, Emerald increases Dexterity, and Amethysts give Vitality. The Legendary Gem level depends on what item is being upgraded.

  • Weapon: Rank 30+ Legendary Gem and three Flawless Royal Rubies, Topazes, Emeralds, or Amethysts
  • Ring and Amulet: Rank 40+ Legendary Gem and three Flawless Royal Rubies, Topazes, Emeralds, or Amethysts
  • Armor: Rank 50+ Legendary Gem and three Flawless Royal Rubies, Topazes, Emeralds, or Amethysts

How to get Kanai's Cube in Diablo 3

In order to do any of the augmenting, players need to first get their hands on Kanai's Cube. This is something that players have to do already by progressing through their seasonal journey, and it can be found in The Ruins of Sescheron in Act 3. Players need to go through the zone until they find the Elder Sanctum, and then the cube will be found there.

Once the cube is obtained, players just need to talk to Zoltun Kulle in the main town of any act. He gives the players the ability to not only augment gear, but also extract Legendary powers, convert gems, convert set pieces, and even remove the level requirement on items, so he's an important character.
