Fallout 4's 'When Pigs Fly' quest was added as part of the 'current-gen' update for the game that was released in April 2024. While only a short side quest, the rewards you get from it are definitely worth your while. Here's how to start and complete When Pigs Fly in Fallout 4.
Unlocking 'When Pigs Fly' Side Quest
You’ll receive the ‘When Pigs Fly’ quest automatically once you’ve left Vault 111 if you’re starting a new game, or as soon as you load an existing save file for Fallout 4. As soon as I loaded my save after downloading the update, this quest appeared in my quest log alongside a number of others also added in as part of the current-gen update.
Fallout 4 'When Pigs Fly' Quest Walkthrough
When you do, select the quest from your Quest Log and then press Square on PlayStation or X on Xbox to show the location on the map. Your quest objective to ‘Investigate Saugus Ironworks’ will be marked just south of Wattz Consumer Electronics and east of Cambridge Police Station. I fast-traveled to Wattz Consumer Electronics and just ventured south from there.
When you arrive at the quest marker in a garage in the middle of a built-up town, interact with the terminal and select the third file down called 'Weapons Dealer in Monsignor Plaza' to advance the quest. You can read the others to get some more background into the story, but if you’re just mainlining the quest, hit that third one and move on.
You can venture directly east through Cambridge Crater like I did but be prepared for the ghouls waiting here. There's also a small amount of radiation in the crater, so you'll want to use a Rad Away once you're done.
Follow the quest marker to the location and be prepared for fights with Raiders and some machine gun turrets dotted around both outside and inside. Head upstairs to the office, killing the two gangster-looking enemies inside. Grab the Rapid Pipe Grenade Launcher Rifle off the table (who doesn't want a fancy new weapon for free?) and read the store note to advance the quest further again.
Now you need to make your way to find Marvin who is conveniently round the corner from where we started this quest at the terminal. That means we're heading back west and following the quest marker again.
Once you reach the marker, climb to the top of the building using the fire escape on the side of the building, killing the nearby raiders as you go. Just before you reach the roof, watch out, Marvin will be in one of the windows with a Piggy Bank Fat Man, and can wipe you out with one shot if you’re not careful. I blasted him quickly and used the wall for cover but he did still wipe out most of my health.
After killing Barrett, grab the Fat Man off his body as well as the schematics. Return to Suggs just across the road and you’ll be able to hand him back over the pipe grenade launcher schematics.
For your hard work, you’ll be rewarded with the Penetrating Chinese Grenade Launcher Rifle and 280 XP.
That’s everything you need to know on how to complete When Pigs Fly in Fallout 4. If you're fancying some Fallout on Steam Deck, we've got you covered with a Fallout 4 Steam Deck compatibility guide. Alternatively, if you're starting over from Vault 111, we've got build guides for Lucy MacLean, Cooper Howard and Maximus from Amazon Prime's critically-acclaimed Fallout series.
