Final Fantasy 16 motion blur – Can you turn it off?

I hate motion blur, you hate motion blur, we all hate motion blur.

I love Final Fantasy XVI. But if there’s one gripe I have with it, it’s the motion blur. Just playing for an hour or two gives me enough of a headache for me to be forced to rest, which is not something I want to do for such a story-rich narrative. This begs the question: can you turn it off?

How to reduce motion blur in FF16

Yes, you can now turn off motion blur in FF16. As of Final Fantasy XVI Version 1.03, players now have a motion blur slider in the Graphics Settings tab of the System menu. The update also allows players to turn off the camera's auto-character focus and increase sensitivity customizations. There are also three new controller presets available.

The option to turn off motion blur was not available when the game launched. Before the release of the game, however, FF16 director Naoki Yoshida promised that an option to turn it off would be added to a “later” patch. You can watch the full pre-release announcement stream here:

Fortunately, the game’s motion blur was not as bad as it was in the demo, at least in my experience. Knowing Yoshida and how he listens to players, I was super happy with how quickly this update was rolled in.

The reason why motion blur isn't as terrible in FFXVI as it is in other games is because of the Frame Rate option in Graphics Settings. This allows players to prioritize the game's performance over its graphics, putting less strain on their consoles and making for a smoother gameplay experience.
