How to get a Chocobo in Final Fantasy 16

Wark, wark.

Traveling on foot is a slog, especially when you’re in a very open area like the Desert. Fortunately, Final Fantasy XVI has Chocobos to make your trips easier. The unfortunate thing is that it’s a missable event. Here’s your guide to getting an essential QoL feature in FF XVI.

FF16 Chocobo - How to get

Remember Ambrosia? You can meet her again if you go on the White-Winged Wonder side quest in Martha’s Rest. It's first available after Main Quest 22 (The Gathering Storm). This is the one that concerns the bearers in the church and ends with you throwing away their remains in a nearby lake.

The stable man will ask you to protect the “hero” Chocobo in the area from bandits. All quest locations will be marked on the map.

Once you’ve completed the side quest, you can now call on your mounts whenever you want—as long as it’s in an open field. Press down on your right analog stick (R3) to call Ambrosia and her flock. Hold R2 while mounted to get her to sprint. Ambrosia can attack using the square button when you’re mounted.

White-Winged Wonder is the first of many side quests marked with a plus (+) sign. Do NOT skip any of the plus sign quests. They add very important things that will help you progress in FFXVI, such as a bigger bag, greater potion potency, and more.
