Unlocking Palace Of The Dead

To unlock Palace Of The Dead, first, make sure you have completed the following:

  • Main story quest Into A Copper Hell
  • Reached Level 30

Once that’s done, head over to New Gridania’s airship landing and accept the quest The House That Death Built from the NPC Nojiro Marujiro. Travel to The South Shroud and search for a Wood Wailer NPC near the Issom-Har chasm on the forest floor.

You’ll then be sent to Quarrymill to speak with another Wood Wailer, unlocking access to Palace Of The Dead. Simply speak with the Wood Wailer again to start exploring.

Exploring the depths

Palace Of The Dead consists of a whopping 200 floors, with a boss fight occurring every 10 floors. Players can initially only access the first 50, though a new quest called What Lies Beneath appears with the Quarrymill Wood Wailor upon conquering floor 50.

Accept and complete the quest to open floors 51-200 of Palace Of The Dead. With new floors to explore come new rules for descending into the depths:

  • After completing floor 50, players may choose to enter the dungeon starting on either floor 1 or floor 51
  • Matched parties can’t advance past floor 100
  • Fixed parties can explore past floor 100 after defeating the boss, though, only if the party suffered no KO’s during the first 100 floors

Instead of using your usual gear to determine your stats, Aetherpool Gear is what you’ll be armed with while exploring. Being gear specific to Palace Of The Dead, it also comes with a couple of specific rules:

  • The stats of Aetherpool gear are separate from the stats of gear being worn outside of Palace Of The Dead
  • Aetherpool gear can be leveled up by opening silver coffers found inside Palace Of The Dead (max level is +99)
  • Aetherpool Gear can be brought out of Palace Of The Dead After clearing floor 100. Doing this will reduce the Aetherpool Gear's level, simply speak with the NPC E-Una-Kotor in Quarrymill to start the exchange

Coffers and treasure

Coffers in Palace Of The Dead contain more than just the chance to level your gear. Helpful items called Pomenders can be found by opening gold coffers while exploring. Providing various beneficial effects, such as petrifying enemies or unveiling the layout of floors, Pomenders can only be used while inside Palace Of The Dead.

While exploring, players may also stumble across what appears to be a strand of floating, yellow light. Standing in this light will spawn a special type of treasure called Accursed Hoard. These small sacks of goodies can be traded to the NPC Quarrymill Expedition Bishop for a variety of randomized rewards, ranging from confetti to Minions.

Every 10 floors that players pass will reward the player with loads of experience, and floors can be replayed an endless number of times. Palace Of The Dead is a great way to level up jobs, and is a fun change of pace from most dungeons. All that’s left is for you to conquer it!
